I saw An Education last week and can confirm that Carey Mulligan is a treasure and will definitely get nominated -- aka the beautiful female in a 'breakthrough' nomination slot. Although I think the movie works because of Alfred Molina as the father, and I hope he gets a supporting nomination. The plot concept is so strange, and it only works to me because of Mulligan (who plays the girl wise beyond her years) and Molina (who convincingly plays a man who would actually be fine with his daughter dating a 30 year old).
Bright Star sort of faded from my memory after I saw it, which I think is a symptom of Jane Campion, not any of the particular performance.
The only locks right now are:
Precious, The Hurt Locker -- Best Picture
Kathryn Bigalow -- Best Director
Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan -- Best Actress
Mo'nique-- Best Supporting Actress
Stanley Tucci, Christopher Waltz -- Best Supporting Actor
Morgan Freeman is looking very strong for Best Actor, as is George Clooney
Up is a lock for a Best Picture nomination.... the whole point of expanding to 10 films was to let big budget films get nom's and that will be Up.
