Maybe because he's losing ground/influence over in Dillon as head of the boosters to Pop McCoy?
I think Papayoke has it right. In many ways, Buddy hasn't evolved emotionally from the high school football star he once was. I think he feels hurt and marginalized by the Wade and QB1 Dad duo and telling Coach about the mailbox was his way of tattling and acting out.
Luke is a very interesting character. Initially thought he would be an ass about having to move, but when he got so upset talking to Mrs. Coach, I was almost afraid that he would go off and commit suicide or something. Another good storyline.
I wish Coach and Mrs. Coach were my neighbors - great couple.
If the speculation about the above spoiler is true, that will be a really tough episode to watch.
