I loved it that the speech that Don made to Peggy -- I appreciate you, I need you, I'll spend my life trying to hire you -- was the speech he should have been making to Betty.
Peggy is more of a "mate" to Don than Betty.
So true!
That Don/Peggy scene was INCREDIBLE. At first, Don was pitching to her, selling to her, trying to get her to buy into his new venture. You could read on her face that she thought she knew all his ad-man tricks. He said all the things she expected. She was not having it. "Thanks for stopping by." But he honed in on the exceptional & profound reason that she needed to take him up on his offer: that the two of them understand how tragedy (both the Kennedy assasination AND their respective pasts) changes people, when others don't. This is their bond. We got to see the Draper ad magic at its finest.
Peggy's deepest need was to have Don acknowledge what was exceptional about her, and acknowledge their special bond. In his 'campaign' to win her back, he did both. I'm not saying he wasn't utterly sincere - he was. But his skill at persuasion & knowing what people need to hear was crucial here.
