Re: Calling all AI math geeks (And pitch/audio questions)
|
I'll leave the technical and mathematical questions to those who are qualified to answer.
"Pitchy" is a shorthand term (perhaps coined by Paula and/or Randy especially for this show). It's not a musical term we (students of music) were taught in music school, although it's based on everything we were taught about proper intonation i.e., proper pitch. In AISpeak, "Pitchy" means the singer failed to hit the proper "pitch" for the note they were supposed to sing. Usually the comment "pitchy" means it happened several times in the song, or all the way through. The musical scale has a finite number of musical tones, and they are evenly spaced. These are exact tones, and unless there's something special written into the song (such as a glissando, where the singer is supposed to slide into or between notes), singers are supposed to hit the precise, proper pitch. When a singer consistently hits above the proper tone or below it, they're "pitchy." |

Re: Calling all AI math geeks (And pitch/audio questions)

just to add to SLD's excellent pitchy info....
often the pitch problems can be cause by improper breath support. You have to breathe correctly, using the diaphram, and exhale with a great deal of control. Someone with really good control should be able to hold a lit match in front of thier mouth while exhaling and the flame should not get blown out. I think the problems some of these younger kids (Jasmine, Diana espc.) are having is the lack of breath control. They are still trying to control with thier throat - or that is how it looks to me when I see how thier chest moves when they breathe. So when they try to do all these vocal gymnastics and it sounds like screeching or just a big ole mess, it is because they do not have the tech to pull it off. And what we hear at home does sound different than what is in the studio. The acoustics are different, and they studio audience has a lit more ambient noise. A lot of that noise is filtered out by the digital filters that are in the sound equipment. |

Ok, but this pitchy thing -- if it's bad it should be able to be detected by an untrained ear right???
I mean, I can't imagine worse tortue than having to listent to rantasia's screetching for more than 45 seconds at a time. It's painful. But the little flower haired girl sounded REALLY good and they kept chanting "pitchy pitchy pitchy" at her. She missed one note, clearly. But they said the whole thing sucked. I can't imagine how. Hey geek! I'll yell when I wanna yell. Less talking, more numberin, k? |

Quote: Another AI term is working here.... Pimping. Judges and producers decide who they want to make it far and who doesn't. Therefore any contestant who they think has a SLIGHT chance of beating their favorites out in the contest will be stoned to death. Other samples of Pimping: 1) Kim Locke was told she needed to lose weight but not Ruben 2) John S has one style all through out the show and needs to work on it but George always sings motown style but still get praises (per IHFJ post) 3) Jennifer is said to be oversinging but when Fantasia screeches, it's wonderful. |

why didn't AI1 have a week with 9 performers? (i didn't start watching AI1 until it was down to 6)
I think, a lot of times when Randy/Paula mention the whole 'pitchy' thing, it's off just a little bit and people who aren't really listening for it can't hear it. Also, everyone's ears work differently, and some don't pick up on tonal differences as distinctly as other people. I can usually tell if a song on the radio/at a club is off by a half step, (like the speed has been upped a little, causing the 'pitch' to raise a bit - and omg it annoys the hell out of me most of the time) when other people i'm with can't tell a bit of difference. |

Quote: Two people got eliminated the first week, so it went from 10 to 8, bypassing 9. The pitchy thing is a bunch of crappola. Just Pleave Leave has been pitchy ever since Honolulu, and he has yet to be called on it. Ba ba Booey has been pitchy the last two weeks as well. It's a cop-out term that is used when the judges want to say something negative about someone but can't. |

Re: > sss... | ||

When a singers pitch is off from the accompaniment the notes that don't match will actually oscillate. Take for example an A at 440 vibrations per second. If the singer is under at say 435.. You will here a "wha-wha-wha-wha" at 5 vibrations per second. It's subtle and hard to hear when they are screaming the notes but it's there.
Listening last night was rough. To me, the "pitchiest" was JPL followed by Diana and Camille. John was off key for some of the song, but not anywhere near last weeks performance. |

cgnudumples - that was a fantastic post on the order trends. Not sure it means too much (other than last being a favored position and first being better than in the middle), but it made for very interesting reading.
Anyone care to do the same for the couch-pick order sometime? That would take some real research.... |

Re: Calling all AI math geeks (And pitch/audio questions)

As far as the pitchy thing...it relates to the actual percision of the music. The fact that you would prefer to listen to pitchy than Fantasia is an opinion and has nothing to do with the percision of the music. (Though as NeonTetra pointed out, the judges are also "pimping" certain people so that over rides things sometimes) Everyone has different tastes and styles, but judges are supposed to comment on the actual performance, not just what they enjoy (though as I said, this doesn't happen...it is not the perfect AI world!)
Also, the judges have often admitted that they do hear it differently live than on TV. So what they hear will not be what we hear. Imagine, they are in a large auditorium with screaming fans and they have to comment right away, no chance to rewind and relisten or anything. And TC...while I do find your question interesting, I wouldn't help out because of your attitude! If you are asking for help you shouldn't be such an a**hole! Just my opinion of course. |

Re: Calling all AI math geeks (And pitch/audio questions)

Its kind of interesting when you compare Kelly and Ruben, they had similar spots. The order of appearance on the show is not random and is chosen by the producers. They try to start and end the show with an excellent performance to draw in viewers. Its no surprise then that people who frequently perform in these 2 spots would stick around closer to the end. Last year, order of appearance of the final 2, was determined by a coin toss.

Quote: Yes and no. Obviously, if it is unpleaseant or odd sounding, it *could* be wrong. Or, it could be right...it depends on the composer/song writer. It's pretty cut and dry with pop music, though...lots of people hear stuff they like...and its total crap. I think "pitchy" might be a the layperson way of saying someone is consistently flat or sharp with regard to specific notes or ranges of notes. Of course, my musical training is all instrumental, not voice. I had a real problem when I was first learning brass instruments. Every one of my notes above a certain level went sharp. It's took a lot of proper breathing and mouthiece excercises to be able to hit and hold the notes properly. |

Pitchy is when some one is frequently sharp and/or flat during the song rather than in tune, or on pitch.
That simple. |

Also, don't you just love how either Clay or Ruben were last every single time (except once, which was probably a mistake).
