OK, I really don't want to say this, but Clay did this song much better.

This sucks. No wonder he's in the anti-pimp spot.

Mac the knife is one of my favorite songs; don't know if Blake's voice was big enough for it though. Overall not that bad.

This is the first Blake performance that I've actually enjoyed. Probably because he didn't try to beatbox.

I don't think the performance was terrible, but it was nothing I'll remember by the end of the night.
The outfit was terrible. It looks like something my grandfather would wear to brunch. |

Blake Lewis.
Mack The Knife. Tony points out in the rehearsal clip that Blake wasn't seizing on the meaning of the song. He's close to pitch at the start, but the finger snapping looks terribly contrived and he looks stiff and constrained. Second verse, more of the same until he does a run. Then more fingersnapping, and it's distracting. This isn't bad vocally although not strong enough or stylistic enough. Finally! The final verse, he moves. And sings!! And tries to bring it. Oops a pitch issue when he gets loud, but not too much. Some more odd waving of the right arm, but overall I found the vocal good enough to forgive the odd motions. A 7. Randy: That was a good way to start the evening. You got this cool jazz vibe. Had a couple pitch problems, but t his is kind of your thing. I liked it. Paula: Tonight you personnified pizazz. You're a hep cat. You're just cool. Simon: Good choice of song. You performed it well. I give you 7 of 10, the band 8 of 10. The band played a big part in that. |
