Somewhere, Frank Sinatra rolls in his grave, crawls out, bitch slaps Pauler and asks Jilly for a double scotch before returning to his eternal rest.

Phil Stacey.
Night And Day. Phil says Tony is his hero, and Tony liked Phil, too. Stationary on the Seal. Nice start, understated if a tad pitchy on a couple of notes. Then his vocal just disappears under the violins for a note or two, until he brings the title line and the second verse, much stronger. To the second verse, I say ... wow. This is that Top 40 voice I've heard in spots. The last 3/4 of the song is quite satisfying, vocally. A 7. Randy: I like the clip with Tony, but I didn't feel any passion. No connection. Audience: BOO! Randy: I know how you feel, just disconnected for me. Paula: The good news is your'e reminiscent of a young Sinatra. Simon: WHAT!? Paula: I just need you to have more joy, to fill the vocals up. Have that personality come through. Simon: Which Frank Sinatra? Seriously. It had all the joy of someone singing in a funeral parlor. Completely and utterly gloomy. Slightly dark, I thought. No life in this performance. Really dark. |
