New Fox show, brung to the US from the UK by Steve Carell. Airs Tuesdays at 8 Central.
Whose Line got it right by rolling out a cast of improv pros with great chemistry. No matter the scenario, they made it work with minimal recognition of the camera or audience. As host, Drew Carey was an amiable bookend to the skits.
Every point that Whose Line hit, Riot misses.
The show's concept was a proven success across the pond. Carell wouldn't have attached himself to it if it didn't have legs. The execution of the first episode was just that, though: an execution.
It just wasn't funny or amusing or compelling. The cast was a bunch of who?s and Steve as the headliner was completely underwhelming. I couldn't help but draw comparisons to Hollywood Game Night, a show that gets it right. If Steve was the host and the cast was composed of both recognizable stars and great improv kids, they might be on to something.
As it exists, though, I wouldn't be surprised to see this show get burned off in schedule changes with an eventual move to Friday nights.
Such a shame. The premise had promise.
