I was talking to a friend this morning who is working with the Red Cross to reconnect families who were separated by Katrina. One of the eeriest memories for me from 9/11 was scenes of hospitals, fully staffed, with emergency room personnel ready to treat the victims that never came.

My husband had flown to a town just outside D.C. the day before for a business meeting. I watched as the 1st plane hit, then the 2nd, then the Pentagon, then that field in PA. I desperately tried to reach my husband as I saw the first tower doing that dreadful lean. Nothing. I called my son's preschool and spoke with the director who calming voice told me they weren't closing and didn't want to upset the kids, but to check in. There's a nuclear power plant 20 minutes away so it wasn't long before we heard the sounds of fighter jets circling above the house. I went back and forth thinking if we're all going to die(remember how scary it all was those first few hours?) Should I get that boy of mine, the one I'd waited so long for, so he'd have his mommy with him? Ultimately, I had him stay there. He didn't need to be around his weeping mother. He was with his friends and having fun. It was ride the pony day, after all. Finally, after 6 hours, I heard from my husband. No flights home, but he somehow was able to rent a van with some colleagues and drive straight through to Florida 2 days later. I remember hearing my Grandpa talk about Pearl Harbor Day and it all seemed so abstract to me when I was a kid. Now I know why, decades after that event he'd always say "never forget".

I made it in about 10 mins before I had to shut it off. HBO had their special on Friday night, I made it about half way through. It's still too hard to watch.

That day, I turned it on to hear about a plane hitting one of the towers. I sped home to turn on the tv. As soon as I got in and turned the tv on, it wasn't but about 30 seconds into it that I saw the second plane hit. I couldn't believe it. I don't even know how long I stood sort of bent over in front of my set with mouth open just saying "oh my god" several times over and over. That whole morning seemed like it was in slow motion for me. I live in Oklahoma and the bombing of the Murrah building was something that affected me a lot. I had an uncle that worked in that part of downtown OKC. I remember the helpless desperation my family felt as we tried to locate him. I could see that this was worlds worse than that. Actually the next week was sort of a hazy blur of just alternating feelings of illness and numbness. I just couldn't get my mind around it all. God be with all those who lost someone that day, those who survived the devastation, those who live in the city, and all the ones who tried to save everyone they could.

By the time I had was out of recovery and awake the towers had collasped, the plane had hit the Pentagon, and crashed in Pennsylvania. Still an Erie day, and will be forever.

Remove this ad I was in high school when it happened (grade 11).. we were told something had big had occurred in NYC but I didn't get to a TV until I got home. Of course I was saddened by all of it but I couldn't help but also be disgusted with the people who did this & basically condemned all Muslims to hell through their actions.

It's interesting how this "anniversary" will be virtually ignored, while I bet that next year will be non-stop specials and shows and memorials, just because it happens to be the fifth anniversary. I don't have a ribbon or something so I'll just say: I remember.

I was a little curious but didn't think it was right for me to ask any of them what happened. Then in 3rd period, at around 12:15, I got called out of class and told to bring my stuff. My mom simply said to me "We've been attacked," which of course made no sense to me. Then we got into the car and turned on the radio and went to pick up my sister at high school. The HSers had been told about it and had been watching it on TV all day. To this day, it absolutely pisses me off that they didn't tell us middle schoolers. It's better to let us know what was going on than to have kids walk past the front office (like I did), know that something had to be going on, but be forbidden from finding out what.

A&E is running an intriquing program at this moment. I feel I owe it to all of those people who lost their lives that day. I sense most of us who were not directly effected have tended to get on with our lives and as time goes by we do NOT think about those who perished as much anymore . What strikes me now is how YOUNG so many of those people were. Just starting out..so full of vigor and whim. New careers, new babies on the way, etc. Now just gone. An empty space at the family table. For those familes who lost loved ones~ it never gets old. I've seen my share of death myself these past four years. 2004 was particularly harsh. Both my 17 year old cat and my father died suddenly within 3 months of each other and my only brother attempted suicide shortly thereafter. I almost went insane with giref. Funny..it was the first anniversary of my father's death yesterday. Now today it is 9/11. It was my dear, dear father who woke me up on that morning of 9/11/2001, telling me...."Wake up! America's being attacked!" Forever not a morning person ~ I asked him... "If that included Philadelphia?" and he replied "I don't think so." I then stated .."I'll see it when I get up" and promptly rolled over and went back to sleep. Of course, when I woke up, I realized the full extent of what had transpired and sat glued for days and nights watching the coverage unfold. I feel bad now that I did not get right up to share those moments with him . He was over 80 and alone and he might have been scared. Oh, the things we wish we could change. Anyhow~~~~~~to all those who have gone before us..

It was amazing that I did not get into an accident because of my tears over what happened. Since my company is contracted by the US Dept of Education, the supervisors were concerned for our safety. Even tho we are on the west coast, rumors were flying that a plane was heading for California. About 30 minutes after I began work, the supervisors went down the rows and told us to log off our phones (I work in a call center) and go home. I spent the rest of the day glued to the TV. What pissed me off at work was this one girl that thought it was no big deal since she didn't know anyone in the towers or planes. I didn't know anyone either but it was America that was attacked and the people lost were our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters. I will always remember the horror and the bravery A Cat's love is unconditional...... That is until you run out of CATFOOD!!!

I was going to fly back to Seattle the next day, and we had the radio on so I woke up, told my buddy to get up and we immediatly formulated our plan to get down there. It then took till about midnight to get below 14th street and make our way to Stuyvessant(sp) where we ran food. We drove back upstate, and I was the only one to go right back down where I hooked up with my tunnel digger buddy who helped get me in and get me the red tag from the Mayors Office (all access). Not much to say, meaning I could fill a book with what I saw in two weeks, but suffice it to say I saw many amazingly strong willed people, I saw the best of NY'ers (we always get a tough rap but when it comes to it, NY'ers care quite a bit), it's just something that takes a while to put into perspective. My thoughts are with London and Madrid, as well as all other people and places where terrorism is a factor. My thoughts are with the people in the Gulf Coast as well as the Tsunami survivors. My thoughts are with my buddies who got shipped to Afghanistan and Iraq. Most of all my thoughts are with the families who lost their children, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, best friends, etc. It really was horrible down there, knowing we weren't going to find anything more than body parts while people still thought we were going to find their relatives. That is what lives with me, all the "Find my daddy!" and similar signs, that still kills me. I am going to repost my pics here in this thread, not so people "have" to view them but because I think they should be viewed. It has nothing to do with me, I did what anybody else would have done if they were able to get in and work, no more no less, just like those who are in the Gulf right now. Trust me, nothing prepares you for the smell of death on that level, so best of luck to the Gulf Rescue and Recovery people. Remove this ad My feelings on 9/11 are so jumbled, it's hard to explain. I was never directly impacted...but so many things touched me it has definitely changed the course of my life. The most obvious (for me personally) was that my uncle was a paramedic in the New York area who nearly diedo...it scares me just thinking about it. I think that's how most people feel. While only some were directly hit because of 9/11, it reshaped our world and our lives in very subtle ways. It reshaped our mindset and our perspective. When you think about it, so much has happened since then, and yet not much has physically changed. We're still America and still going about our lives, but I don't think anyone can say they're "over" 9/11, and I'm sure everybody's feelings from the time still linger. For me, it might have not been a life-changing event...but it has impacted me and all of us largely. Time passes, history tells its course...but we still always will remember this in one way or another. Those who died will always be remembered. Cats: How are you gentlemen !! Cats: All your base are belong to us.
