The Survivor Twists |

Hey guys, I am really bored and I though I might write a thread for all the survivor twists of each season and what I think of them. You can right your
opinions too and if I am missing any you can add them in. Borneo - The Merge: It wasn't really a twist but I'll put it down because there isn't
anything else. I Think it turned out well although the naive Pagong's created the term "Pagonging". Australian Outback - New campsite for Merge:
This is the only twist I can possible think of. I like how we got to see a new area and it created some good drama later on (the river flood) Africa - Tribal
Switch: The first ever major twist. I love how it happened and that the tribes stayed even because the 3 "best" tribemembers switched tribes. It
basically gave Boran the upper hand at the merge Marquesas - Tribal Switch: If it wasn't for this then there wouldn't of been the coconut chop alliance
so for that I am thankfull. I didn't actually like how it was done though, they should of made the tribes even. Thailand - Mutiny: Boring because nobody
mutinied. Nuff said. Fake-Merge: I HATE how this turned out because it screwed one of the best characters of the season, Shii Ann. It also ended up as a merge
of 5-3 and was predictable up untill the end. Amazon - Men V Woman: I loved this and I loved that the women kicked the men's booty in the beginning. I
created some new tribe dinamics that we hadn't seen before. It was good. Tribal Switch: I liked how this turned out because it broke up the men/women
alliances. I also liked Jenna and Dave's night out. Pearl Islands - Outcasts: I am totally on the fence with this one. I love it because it led to a Sandra
win but I hate it because it screwed the Morgan's (yes I liked them) and it sortof goes against the the concept of the game (when you snuff your torch the
game is over..etc) All Stars - Tribal Dissolve: I think it was a really good idea but it lead to the Ambore/Rawb/JBlew/Poopert alliance, which I hated Tribal
Switch: Obviously a bad twist because only one persn swapped and the person that got voted out was probly gonna go anyway Vanuatu - Men V Women: We had already
seen it so it was not as interesting. Created the Yasur 7 woman dominating alliance. Tribal Switch: Meh. Nothing really happened that wouldn't of happened
anyway, in terms of new alliances at the merge Palau - Tribe of 20/Pick-em: I really loved this idea and I hope they do something like it that lasts in the
future. Guatemala - Return of Steph/BJ: H A T E D! Tribal Switch: I think that this created really good tribes (well one really good tribe) so for that I liked
it. HII: Pretty good idea and I am glad it actually got used Panama Exile Island - Exile Island: At the beginning it seemed really good but ended up sucking
with the same people going over and over again 4X4: Though it was really cool but I wish it was kept longer. Imagine a merge with 4 tribes! Breakdown: Sucked
cos it was waaay to early HII: Sucked cos it wasn't used Cook Islands/Fiji - Someone can do them for me cos there is too many to list lol

You could edit your post to put in spaces...
Just so you know, many of the threads (I can think of at least 2 right now) are discussing twists. You might want to check in there. I doubt you'll be banned for something like that. MANY MANY worse threads than this have been started. |

I have a few hours before I get dinner and I've always wanted to do an analysis of every single twist (including a few that are debatable but Zesty forgot,
although I'm probably missing a few too) so...
The Borneo merge isn't a twist; they all knew about it in advance so I won't include it. Outback Merge at a Different Campsite - This was great since everyone was so prepared to go over/stay at Kucha...a surprise for sure but I don't think it could be considered unfair, and besides, it would have broken the streak of the eventual winners staying at home base for the merge camp. Africa Tribal Switch - First reaction? "They can't do that! That's not fair!" Reaction 30 minutes later, when Silas got the boot? "That was awesome! Great twist!" Best twist ever for sure. Marquesas No Food/Fire Help - The area provided more than enough, so it was only noted in the premiere really. Tribal Swap - Loved it, and still wish they'd do another random swap. The Summit - One of my all-time favorite Survivor moments, and a great way to make the merge an event for viewers as much as the players. Giving Up Immunity - A weak twist that's only been used twice (and only once did someone actually give it up) but it did cause drama that made for the best TC ever (Marquesas F5). Thailand Pick'em - Great idea on paper but the way it ended up is what really hurt the season--it was essentially young vs. old so there wasn't as much conflict. "Anybody here wanna switch tribes?" - Completely overblown but not a bad idea on paper. Fake Merge - Made for one fantastic episode and then a string of weak ones. Ironically, this is one season where an actual merge at ten would've actually caused some conflict between former tribemates. Amazon Battle of the Sexes - Great idea the first time...didn't need to be repeated, especially so soon after. Tribal Switch - This was really well-done, although I'm not a huge fan of only one or two people having all the control of tribes. Pearl Islands Jumping Overboard/Panamanian Market - To be honest, the producers outright lied to the players on this one, but it still made for a fantastic opening. Kidnapping Rupert - I'm one of the apparent few who loves PI ep5 and Rupert being over at Morgan is a huge reason why. Might be considered a bit unfair but made for good TV. Mutiny (unaired) - Didn't make the show so who cares? Outcasts - Controversial for sure, and definitely screwed over Andrew (who I actually like...sorry). It was unfair but without it the season wouldn't be quite as strong. Jury Competes for F4 Immunity - Kind of a gray area--should immunity really be out of the equation while voting post-merge? It wouldn't have changed anything, since Jon would've won, but I'm still iffy on this one. All-Stars 3 Tribes - I wish they'd done this in a different season, because I think it's an awesome change for the game that was overshadowed by having All-Stars. Dissolving Saboga - Loved Mogo Mogo's misfit raft winning, and I still think ASS was a perfect season for a pick'em, so it works in that sense. Kidnapping Kathy - She wouldn't have gone anywhere anyway. I would hope that she would've had the sense to keep Colby around but judging by her comments in the next episode I doubt it. F10 Switch - Totally unnecessary...I still think they planned to merge that day but the producers attempted to break up Rob and Amber, and it worked. Two People Winning Immunity at F9 - A cool idea that they should bring back if only because females win so rarely these days. I'll do the rest later... |

Beatles, is the summit in Marquesas actually considered a twist? Wasn't the meeting between Jenna Lewis and Dr Sean considered a summit? Add the purple
rock tiebreaker for Marquesas. The swap in All Stars was also random. Unfortunately, random swaps don't guarantee that the tribes get sufficiently mixed
up which is why it was never done again. If the swap had resulted in more shuffling in All Stars, we might have had something similar to the TC right after
the merger in Fiji. The random swap in S4 could easily have flopped. Fortunately it didn't. I really wish they would release that damned season on DVD!

One could argue that the number of days in Australia was a "twist" too. The only season where they had 42 days, every other had 39.

beatles20147 wrote:Eventually someone's going to come around that actually uses the IN to his/her advantage and we finally see some deals being made with it. I suppose it makes sense that it's been so rarely given up, considering the rampant insecurity in this game, but still, it's always disappointed me that so few players have taken advantage of it (Yau was the first one to use it as a real strategic tool, but still, there's a lot more room for strategy there). Jury Competes for F4 Immunity - Kind of a gray area--should immunity really be out of the equation while voting post-merge?I used to think it was a terrible twist simply because no one there had a real shot of beating a group of 5 well-rested, well-fed people in trivia - sorry, but that's just really difficult to do. Now that more time has passed, however, I appreciate the fact that there was one moment in PI where nobody was immune. In a way, it kind of makes the season more pure, because there was at least one point where immunity didn't come into play and strategy was able to completely dictate the vote. Two People Winning Immunity at F9 - A cool idea that they should bring back if only because females win so rarely these days.Agreed. Apart from the tribal swap at F10, I'd like to see all of the ASS twists brought back at some point. Holy crap there was a failed mutiny in PI!? I firmly believe that's an unsubstantiated rumor. As far as I can tell, one poster brought it up at one point, using the Ep. 5 RC treemail as evidence: The assumption is somewhat reasonable, given the nature of the treemail, but it's far more likely that it was just referring to Rupert's stay at Morgan, and nothing more. It was meant to further the theme of mutiny and cause doubts about Rupert's loyalties, but it wasn't meant to indicate a tribal swap, I don't think, especially since it would work rather oddly with Rupert temporarily at Morgan anyway. Besides, no one in the cast has ever mentioned it, let alone confirmed it, and when I asked Lill about the twist, she told me she had never heard of it happening (though technically it was possible, since since she wasn't in the game at that point). Outback = Car RewardThe car reward is not a twist any more than any other reward challenge is a twist. If you count the car reward as a twist, you have to count every unique reward that's ever been given in Survivor, and that's just silly. The car is one of many rewards that's been repeated in most seasons, and it's by no means a twist in the game. Unfortunately, random swaps don't guarantee that the tribes get sufficiently mixed up which is why it was never done again.Um, the F10 swap in Fiji was randomized. (And by the way, I still think that's a twist that gets more flak than it deserves. It's really just a tribal swap with another added element that actually makes it more fair, because at least you have your allies batting for you before the challenge, rather than off on the other beach.) The random swap in S4 could easily have flopped. It actually did, except that the far weaker Maraamu tribe somehow managed to pull off some miracle wins (and even still, it caused the defeat of the likable pre-merge underdog). |

Holy crap there was a failed mutiny in PI!? Makes sense with the theme. Can you tell me more about it?Basically it was like Thailand and Cook Island's, I think it took place before the challenge where they had to fill up each others boats with water (the one that Drake decided to throw).. and and no one mutinied, so they didn't show it. Also, is the Final 3 really a twist? |

When you do it with a F2 for 12 seasons, then suddenly have a F3, yeah, I'd say so. The big question is whether they do it this year. If they do it for
China, I'd say we can pretty much accept it as a permanent part of the game for the time being and it is a permanent change in the game's format rather
than a one time twist.
(And by the way, I still think that's a twist that gets more flak than it deserves. It's really just a tribal swap with another added element that actually makes it more fair, because at least you have your allies batting for you before the challenge, rather than off on the other beach.) Arguing with Ravu about the issue in another threat got me thinking the same way. Lots of people complained about it at the time because it got rid of a very likable Michelle; but the fact is that all it was was a tribal switch. Something we've had many times before. Unfair for Michelle, certainly, but not anymore than say the switch in Africa was unfair to Silas or the switch in Marquesas was unfair to Sarah. The biggest problem I always had with the thing was not axing Michelle (who was likable, but not as great in my eyes as many others) but rather delaying the merge by a boot, making, like the season before, 3 pre-merge jurors.

The car is one of many rewards that's been repeated in most seasons, and it's by no means a twist in the game.Depends how you define "twist". I agree the car reward is a standard part of the game, but if we're using Borneo as the model as "true Survivor," then the car reward would be a twist. Also, the car reward seems to have a powerful affect on the game, so I definitely think it qualifies as a significant add-on to the original format Arguing with Ravu about the issue in another threat got me thinking the same way. Lots of people complained about it at the time because it got rid of a very likable Michelle; but the fact is that all it was was a tribal switch. Something we've had many times before. That Fiji twist was more like a temporary swap, and my biggest problem was the "delayed merge" aspect. It was like Thailand's fake merge. It made a potentially game-changing PI game MORE predictable by empowering the strategic duds Boo and Stacy . I wanted to see Mookie and Dreamz float between the 2 tribe groups, and was
hoping for utter chaos. Having Michelle around would've complicated the Syndicate alliance too

Holy crap there was a failed mutiny in PI!? Makes sense with the theme. Can you tell me more about it? Yep, as PT said, it would have been in ep5--Jeff P3 found it via the Tree Mail posted on the website, and Michelle alludes to it in her vote against Shawn. Beatles, is the summit in Marquesas actually considered a twist? Wasn't the meeting between Jenna Lewis and Dr Sean considered a summit? It's definitely questionable. I included it because Rob and Kathy weren't really given any info on what it entailed (even though they should've deduced it based on the timeframe). Add the purple rock tiebreaker for Marquesas. Good one, I forgot about that. I know that they changed the tiebreaker procedure from S1 to S2 but I won't qualify that as a twist since it was a known rule of the game. The swap in All Stars was also random. Unfortunately, random swaps don't guarantee that the tribes get sufficiently mixed up which is why it was never done again. If the swap had resulted in more shuffling in All Stars, we might have had something similar to the TC right after the merger in Fiji. The random swap in S4 could easily have flopped. Fortunately it didn't. I really wish they would release that damned season on DVD! Amen! Random swaps are definitely risky, but except for Guatemala, every single season from ASS on has had some sort of pick'em (Fiji had two). I understand the need for them (even though they don't really prevent Pagongings in the slightest) but I wish they'd switch things up from time to time. The big part of it that made things less fair than any of the other examples you gave was that they went to TC immediately after with no time to strategize. Sure, some discussion came up at TC but it's not like someone could propose a great blindside there. They had no time to plan for it at all. (I still say Earl and Yau should have thrown it, saving their ally Michelle and voting out Boo with Cassandra.) Now then... Purple Rock - Would it suck to leave because of it? Absolutely. But it's a great idea as far as forcing people to reconsider strategies. I don't agree with the rule that the two people receiving votes get immunity, but otherwise, it's guaranteed to produce drama no matter what--either someone leaves out of the blue or someone switches their vote. Vanuatu Battle of the Sexes - The S9 cast is full of strong females but the male casting leaves a lot to be desired. This wasn't the season to replay this twist, as much as the culture encouraged it. Double Boot - Lame but I suppose necessary. This is the most simple and most fair way to handle one I guess. Swap - I liked that one person picked the tribes and the other chose which one to go with...but couldn't they have thought of something better than rock-paper-scissors for it? Palau Episode 1 - The premiere had a ton of twists, most of which were pretty cool. Giving them no info to start with was a unique start to the game, and the pick'em worked because there was the drama of two people not getting picked (which was a shame but it's better if they must have a cast of 20). I wish they kept the tribes on the same beach after the first IC, but whatever. Double Boot - This sucked for Willard because he had no way of winning immunity to save himself. Letting Koror sit in on Ulong and vote for one of them to get immunity was a cool twist. Exile Island - Seems a little random to have it pop up only once, but I think the last three seasons proved it's better that way. Janu lost fair and square, and was more interesting on EI than she was ever before, so in that sense it was worth it. More later... |
