MTV to Broadcast Legally Blonde in its Entirety Along with Backstage Special by Broadway.com Staff In an historic move, MTV has announced plans to film the Broadway musical Legally Blonde and air it in its entirety multiple times on the popular cable network. The first broadcast of the MTV special Legally Blonde - The Musical, which includes a backstage look at the hit show, is scheduled for Saturday, September 29 at 1PM. MTV will film Legally Blonde onstage at the Palace Theatre, where it opened on April 29, for two special performances in mid-September. In order to bring the TV audience closer to the action of the musical, cameras will be placed onstage in addition to shooting from various locations in the theater. The first filming will take place without an audience and the second in front of an invited audience of VIPs. "We know how iconic the film version of Legally Blonde is for our audience and the musical's positive reception shows that those same die-hard fans have no problem supporting its evolution to the stage," said Tony DiSanto, Executive Vice President of Series Development for MTV in a statement. Added Legally Blonde producer Hal Luftig: "MTV's endorsement of a show on this level is unprecedented and will benefit the industry as a whole as Broadway continues to expand its audience. This is a great match and we could not be happier." Over the past 30 years, many shows have been videotaped for TV (many for PBS), but no show has ever been broadcast in its entirety while still running on Broadway. Tony DiBari, Tim Healy, David George, George McTeague and Frank Garritano serve as executive producers of the MTV special. Legally Blonde stars Laura Bell Bundy as Elle Woods, Christian Borle as Emmett, Orfeh as Paulette, Michael Rupert as Professor Callahan, Richard H. Blake as Warner, Nikki Snelson as Brooke and Kate Shindle as Vivienne. The producers must have taken the deal as a last-ditch effort to get some of their investment back.

Nick Lachey is joining the show as Warner in December and Kristen Bell is in talks to take over as Elle in February. It seems they are hoping the combination of MTV familiarity plus big names will bring more people to the show.

I don't know the musical all that well, but it seems like Bell's vocal ability would be a fairly good for for the Elle character (this is pretty much based on the 2 or so songs I have heard).

I'll watch this Legally Blonde thing. It'll be awful but seeing as I live nowhere near New York, it will be fun to actually see a new/current broadway show.

Reefer Madness was the shit. That was one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while. Kristin Bell wasn't the strongest in the case (that would be Ana Gasteyer) but she was still really good. Of course I'm a show queen and wish everything could be a musical so others may not feel the same.

That said, this isnt a move of desperation as they really arent desperate, they are still bringing in a gross of $900,000+ a week, which is plenty to keep the show open for a long time. Plus its not really a cast driven show, as LBB really lacks the leading lady star power they thought she had. They want to get as many teenage girls as possible to see it, and hope to turn it into a Wicked type frenzy.
