I wanted to like James Rollins books, because they sound like great adventure tales. Then I started one (Dust Storm or Sandstorm or something similar) and it
seemed like every chapter ended with a cliffhanger attack by hooded assassins. It got tiresome very quickly. Are all of his books like that?

Sandstorm was my least favorite book of his, it did seem a little tedious at
times and I almost put it down. There are a lot of attacks and bad guys in his books, but for the most part, it keeps
them moving. You just grabbed a bad one to start with.

The Judas Strain by James Rollins Was it good? I just ordered it. And Next by Michael Crichton. I have run out of books by authors that I know I
like, so I've been taking some suggestions from here. Just finished Clockwork Orange, Atlas Shrugged, and 1984.

I'm reading Breaking Dawn also. My daughter is reading it for the second time. And yes, it's the 4th in the series. We went to a Breaking Dawn party to
get the book Aug.1st at midnight, my daughter (13) stayed up almost all night reading. Then we spent a week at the beach in North Carolina, she finished it in
2 days. I think it's a little adult for a 13yo, but what the hey, it's marketed for 12 and up. What do I know?
I read Jimmy Buffett's latest book while there. It was ok. I'd rather read his beach, boats, and beer stories, tho. I think I may read that Vodka book next, sounds fun. Then I'm gonna re-read Half Blood Prince in anticipation for the movie. The trailer looks awesome btw. |

Chelsea's book is great, Papa.
The bit w/ the Mexican girls made me cry I was laughing so hard. I'm reading Anderson Cooper's book right now. It's making me pretty sad. |

I love, love, love Tom Robbins books -- my favorite is Jitterbug Perfume.
I bought Middlesex at a sidewalk sale last week for a quarter -- I am having an awfully hard time getting into it. |

debdesign1 wrote: I think Breaking Dawn was a little too adult for me, and I'm 27. I'm kind of surprised the publisher allowed some of those plotlines in a YA
imprint when the rest of the series didn't touch on such adult themes. I, personally, couldn't relate to a lot of the character decisions in this book,
and I hated that the thing that made the first three so awesome (the tension of Bella and Edward's star-crossed romantic relationship) was completely
replaced with a different kind of relationship teens couldn't possibly relate to (being vague so I don't spoil). Anyway, I was highly disappointed in
the book, and I'm a huge Meyer fan. (I also went to a release party, and the NYC concert, and read the book pretty much non-stop until I finished 22 hours
after I purchased it. I was afraid to go online all week due to leaked spoilers I didn't want to know in advance). (I think Meyer is a little confused
about her target audience. Breaking Dawn should have been on an adult shelf, while I felt her adult novel, THE HOST, should have been on a YA shelf. It's
great that she writes novels with cross-market potential, but from interviews I've seen, it seems she doesn't think about audience while she writes,
and I think that's a mistake because obviously she's not quite grasping which elements are appropriate for which market and I think BD alienated a lot
of her fandom because of this, based on message boards I've been reading.)
Anyway, since this is a "what are you reading?" thread, I'm currently reading two books simultaneously. A HOUSE ON MANGO STREET (forget the author?) and HOW TO BE BAD by E. Lockhart, Sarah Mylonowski, and Lauren Myracle. |

Middlesex was hard to get into, and I didn't think worth it in the end.

Middlesex was decent but overly praised because of its subject. Cal wasn't written as an involving person, only as an idea and that sucks for a narrator.

I just finished The Catcher in the Rye. It's another one of those books I just never got around to reading before. I was disappointed, though, because the
book's controversial reputation precedes it and then nothing all that controversial actually happens in the book. Holden could have at least let that
teacher fuck him or something. Oh well. Cross it off the list.
