Enough lurking already
.
I have seen enough of Survivor and read enough postings to often be able to predict the boot from an episode before it is half over. My questions is of semantics and forgive me if it has been asked or brought up before. It is called Reality Television and one of the fundamental definitions of realty is: The totality of all things possessing actuality, existence, or essence. The participants are aware that they are on camera and even become accustomed to being filmed 24/7. Production crews are always near and there is never any life or death danger. Contestants win prizes during the game that take them away to luxury resorts for some serious pampering. It is a game created and disseminated for maximum fiscal and entertainment value, just like a hockey game. So why is it called Reality Television? In reality it is a game show. It is a battle of wits, strength, intelligence, and teamwork set in a tropical location. Heck, we even refer to players by saying theyve Got Game It could be argued that there is more reality on Candid Camera or the game show Oblivious! In those programs the participants have no idea they are on camera and display genuine reactions to the situations in which they are placed. Case in point would be Fairplay arranging to fake his grandmothers death with his buddy prior to leaving the US for the Pearl Islands. Granted it made for great ratings but the only way to stop that from happening would be to pluck unsuspecting contestants from their beds and deposit them on a desert island with a bunch of strangers. However, this would probably lead to speculation that MB is an alien! There have been moments on Survivor and other programs like Amazing Race or Big Brother where I half expect Chuck Noris to show up with the gong! Re: Hatchs ugly naked butt. So to be more accurate, could it be said that these programs are situational games? Or, do we not have to be politically correct anymore? I keep forgetting. A warm hug to all of you for making me a Survivor Guru among my friends and colleagues. Keep up the good work! |

Hi there. I was wondering if there were any teams being set up for the upcoming survivor season. I'm non badged but I'd love to join a team and I promise I would play religiously. I joined the game as an individual halfway through the last season, and I did really well. Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks!

I remember the first write ups of Survivor when the show very first came out. It was definitely written up as a "game show", which it most certainly is. However it is also a television series, with the contestants being the "stars" of the show, which makes it different from regular game shows where contestants are on for one or a few episodes at a time and dont really develop a television identity. I dont know where or when the term "reality television" was coined, but it is more or less a hybrid type of television product between a game show and a television series, so "reality television" is as good a label for this type of TV as anything. No?
I mean, not all situation comedies are funny and not all dramas are that dramatic, right? |

Quote: True enough! But I still feel there is more reality in the reveal on Debbie Travis Facelift. I imagine the term Reality Television was coined somewhere in a boardroom full of evil network prods and their spin-doctor henchmen. ooooooOOOOOOOOoooooooo Reality TV is a perfect title! Well have em glued to the set every Thursday night! Regardless of where the term came from, they have created a show that is worth watching and brings people together from all over the world. |

Reality is as good a title for reality tv as "science fiction" is for Star Wars.
Those who like to overanalyze may call it differently, but eh, it works for us.lol |

^^^^^^^
Actually, I learned from my television writing class that all "reality" shows hire writers after-the-fact to create a scripted drama out of unedited footage. Hence, we get 20 minutes of spirit stone babble in ep. 1 of Vanuatu to tell the whole story of the season. There might still be a set up from ep. 1 to the whole story that we will see play out later. |

I found that the easiest way was to take the link somebody posted here in MESS and save it to my desktop. That was loads easier than trying to remember which thread had the link in it!

The thread more or less stuck with us, but moving to Yuku put it way down low. It took me about an hour to find it.

"It was a large room. Full of people. All kinds.
And they had all arrived at the same building at more or less the same time. And they were all free.
