Jack Tourette, I actually liked Terry's story but there was a very complex story told in Panama. Terry was introduced as a hero, that was his main early portrayal but it didn't last to the end.

Here is how Terry wasn't Tom 2.0:

1- Misty wasn't really seen as someone who had to be voted off, yet no attempt was made to put the blame anywhere else but on Terry's shoulders for her elimination. A first, small chink in Terry's armor.

2- When it came time to eliminate Ruth Marie, scenes were manipulated to make us think that Terry was promising her the 5th position in his alliance only to later show him voting her out. Remember Nick put the blame on Terry for rationalizing about not keeping his word. Dan even told us how Terry was making a mistake for voting out Ruth.

3- Was Sally edited as a likable player? I would say so. She was always opposed to Terry, even calling his alliance a Boys' club. It made Terry look like a misogynist.

4- Was Danielle right to be angry at Terry for sending her to exile instead of seeing her mom? Probably not because, who else could he send? Seeing her smashing a coconut that she said represented Terry's head could have portrayed her as a vengeful player yet the episode ended portraying Terry as the bad guy for saying loving your mother is not as important as other forms of love. Even worse, we heard Terry, in confessional, saying Aras' reaction was a sign of weakness, a way to advance his own game. That didn't make Terry look too heroic. In fact, it made him look like not caring about his actions.

5- The argument with Cirie was the culmination of his portrayal as "a good player turned bad". Cirie was someone the audience was meant to like. Mama Cirie was not someone to call "more careless than my kids at home". There was no reason to show that scene except to make Terry more unsavory. That made him look annoying. Had Terry won the game, that scene and others would've been cut out or presented differently.

6- The rope challenge made Terry look like a sore loser, not a hero.

As I wrote, Panama wasn't a simple "good guys vs bad guys" story but, especially after he started making deals with Courtney and Shane, Terry's hero story disappeared and he was presented as a type of villain: An uncaring, almost heartless player who, mechanically, could only think of the game.

People here like to hand pick Terry's asshole moments, but deny Casaya's asshole moments to him.

But who were the Casayan assholes? Courtney, Shane, who had half a burger hanging from his mouth in the end, and Danielle who Jeff called out at TC.

Aras wasn't stigmatized by that since he participated and I don't think anyone blamed Cirie for knowing her limits. In the end, who did Terry try to side with? Alternatively with Courtney, Shane and Danielle. It was as if Terry went over to the "Dark Side"!

"Terry was the underdog wether you like it or not."

Yes he was, but mainly in the commercials to interest people who like the strong military type. On the show, Terry was portrayed much more as an unstoppable robot rather than as an underdog. If I were to ask what people remember of Terry's visit with his wife, most would answer that she was said to be more competitive than he was. Not a very warm human story.

I certainly agree with that but Courtney and Shane weren't players the audience were made to agree with. Having them endorse Terry isn't necessarily a good sign. Cirie and Aras were the ones that were given the human interest story. Mama Cirie, making her family proud and Aras, who seemed to grow up in front of our eyes. (Compare his episode #1 showing to what we saw during his final day's talk with Danielle on the rocks to convince yourself of that.)
