I have relatively high hopes now. It can't be worse than last season so at least it will seem good in comparison.

Look at the spoilers thread for some rumored contestants who make it far in Hollywood and some probably to the top 24. Just looking at them as a whole, you
can tell they were going for people with actual marketability and much more modern styles of music, unlike last year's schlock of boring, hideous ogres who
seemed like they were cryogenically frozen half a century ago and released in 2007 to win a karaoke contest. Adding instruments may have helped remedy that.

I'm just not sure how AI can be compared to those other shows which clearly involved filming people having conversations with EACH OTHER, living their daily lives and basically being filmed 24/7. AI is a show about singing, they don't do behind the scenes footage, the contestants don't have conversations with eachother or the judges about personal intimate details of their lives ON CAMERA so unless Ryan asks one of them "hey what do you look for in a romantic partner" and one of the guys says "broad shoulders and a goatee" I'm not sure how it "comes up" that someone is gay. Of course, if they have a significant other who attends the show, like many do, it wouldn't be out of the question for them to be mentioned or shown in the audience with that caption underneath. Also the difference between AI and those other shows, the public doesn't CONTROL their fate. They can be gay and it has no consequences. Anyone who thinks there isn't prejudice in society against gay people is seriously deluding themselves. |

It's a singing competition. What has "openly gay" have to do with singing? All we should see of the contestants is their minute and a half
singing. (or in Sanjaya's case, a minute "half-singing") I don't need or want to see anything "openly gay" whatever that means, in
their minute and a half singing.
There's no place at all for anyone's "orientation" in any part of the show. If they're singing a love song, I don't need to know or want to know if the person they're singing to is a guy or a girl. There have been many gay people in AI, but it hasn't come up and shouldn't come up in relation to the show.

Anwar was openly gay but it was never acknowledged on the show (unless you count Simon's comment after his disastrous "September" performance)

I really liked Anwar, but if he announced that he was singing a love song to a guy, I would have missed the first line of his song while going
"eewwwww."

You don't know what "openly gay" means? Yikes.

So all those times when Josh, Chris or Phil or Curly dedicated songs to their wives then that shouldn't have been allowed, right? If someone is "openly gay", meaning they aren't hiding who they are, and have a special someone in their life, they should be allowed to dedicate a song to that person as all the straight people have done. I roll my eyes when the straight people do it, and I'd do the same for gay people. Will it turn voters off? Just like ILGE said...probably. |

But it doesn't stop me from enjoying breeder music. I just barf a little when I see hetero expressionism (dedicating songs to their main pussies they married etc..). I would vote for breeders too. I hope just because one is openly gae that people will not vote for them. |

How fucked is it that it's 2007 and people on a fucking reality tv show have to worry about possibly losing votes because they like penis and they have a
penis.
People suck. I have a question about being openly gay on Idol, does anyone anyone know if Will Young was out or if the Pop Idol viewing public knew about his orientation while he was on the show? I've always wondered because I thought it was great that the original winner of Idol was gay and the British people didn't give a fuck and loved him anyway. Even if he wasn't out while on the show he's still been hugely successful afterwards and he's definitely out now. |

SHC, I honestly think the difference is Britian v. America. In Britian it's not seen as shameful to be gay like it is here. It sucks that that's
the way it is but sadly that's the reality these contestants live with. Will Young would've never won Idol here in America.
The fact of the matter is being gay on AMerican Idol is used as a PUNCHLINE between Ryan and Simon. that's not exactly an environment condusive to
being open about being gay.

Will definitely wouldn't have won American Idol, I think it would have had more to do with his style and voice than his sexuality though, or possibly a combination of both. I can't think of any other Idol shows where a contestant was openly gay, mind you I'm sure with most of the shows outside America people really wouldn't give a fuck. The fangirls for Canadian Idol are in denial about their obviously gay male cuties but I doubt the rest of the country would really care if any of them came out or brought their boyfriend to the show, except maybe Harper's cronies but who gives a shit about Conservatives. |

Isn't Daniel K from German Idol open and flamingly gay? He got 3rd place.
Then again, it's the land of bad disco/Europop music. |

Will Young was not out while on the show. After he won, he came out because one of the tabloid papers over there was going to out him. There were rumors at the time that Will's being gay was one of the reasons Simon backed the runner-up instead of Will. I don't know if any of the talent shows in the UK have had any openly gay contestants, actually. They are run by Simon Cowell or Nigel Lythgoe (the Idol/Got Talent/X-Factor stuff), and I've often thought Lythgoe and Cowell both have issues about masculinity and not wanting their shows to have any openly gay people. |

If he wasn't out people certainly knew and didn't care about his sexuality, or about his actual sex even. He did indeed come third, despite being horrendously awful. It's not as Alexander was any better though. Boy do German's have weird ass taste. |

Nelly Furtado is huge in Germany, as a side note.
I LURV Alexander Klaws. Sexy <3 <3. Free Like The Wind is one of my favourite Idol songs. |

Sexy for sure, but also sucky, imo.
Do you think liking Nelly Furtado is a testament to their weird taste MikiBoi or were you just saying? |

Just sayin. I actually <3 Furtado, but it's interesting that they do like such a weird variety over there of music. From Furtado to their Idols to
Hasselhoff.
The only thing Alexander sucks is you know what. He is like the less talented and aryan Callea. |

Alexander Klaws sucks.
I don't really follow German Idol, but I like its latest winner Mark Medlock. <3 He's gay too apparently and was once married to a dude.

So it looks like America is the only country still stuck in the dark ages. Every other country is just like oh they like dudes, whatever and moves on (save
from fangirls who become distressed when their precious boy candy could possibly like penis, but that has less to do with oppressing homosexuals than it does
to do with their weird fantasies and dreams about kissing Craig Sharpe or whoever).
