It has to be total shock for most of these girls that what they are now looking for in a Miss America is someone "real and relevant". It also must really suck to have spent all time with coaches, stylists, etc. only to find out it may all have been for naught. These pageants are "big business" these days. This is probably more true of the Miss Universe franchise than the Miss America one. I feel kind of bad for them, but on the other hand it is an entirely entertaining premise--sure to prompt lots of emotional break downs. I hope that the judging for the actual pageant really does reflect what they say they are looking for this year and not just end up with another beauty queen clone as Miss America.

You have to blame these 50 to 60 year old state eds who keep on picking judges who are out of touch what women look like today. The current and previous Miss Americas are clones of each other.

They are trained to be this model ideal of what Miss America should be--when in my opinion they should just be learning to be the best possible version of themselves--working on their personal strengths but remaining true to who they are--and be individuals, not clones.

It seems that they all thought they were going to the regular pageant- one of them said she packed her stuff for the pageant- and what she would wear for that. So if they really did trick them into it, I am surprised that every single one of them is going along with it. I guess they are all desperate to win. I think that possibly they were told it would be different but not told what. Or else the contract was written in double talk. I am not going to be able to enjoy this show until I figure this out! I just hate when the premise bugs me like this- I can't relax an enjoy it. In sum, I want to know what they knew and what they didn't know about the reality part.

It seems like they really did not know that they would be doing a reality type show though so maybe it was very vague language of some kind--like they would be doing "publicity or public relations" prior to the pageant. Ethel Mae Potter I had to laugh when I saw your name--I keep wondering if you are my mother's long lost sister--her maiden name was Shirley June Potter....

Posts: 125 (01/07/08 9:58 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	didn't they do this last year? the girls thought they were going to some kind prep class and ended up in a reality show. they ended up enjoying it and it made a great watch. it ended with the real pageant and I watched it and actually had someone to root for. and I never watch pageants. it's a great gimmick to increase pageant ratings.

Miss Idaho (wasn't it?) with the big poofy hair and the makeup gun set to "whore" was really something. And the one judge loved Miss Vermont and she was still bottom three...guess his vote didn't carry much weight or she'd have been safely in the middle, wouldn't she? I never even caught a glimpse of Misses Michigan, Arkansas, or Missouri...they seemed to focus on just a handful of the girls.

What a great premise -- and what a way to (at least try to) build ratings for the actual pageant. Miss Florida certainly came off poorly last night. She whined incessantly about the prospect of jumping into the pool because her makeup would wash off. Egads! But for some of 'em, including her, it was obvious they'd caked on so much makeup that it couldn't all possibly wash off because they still looked fully made up -- and pretty awful -- after getting wet. I guess Miss Alaska is just really tiresome -- but I liked her makeover. Miss Rhode Island's haircut rocked -- it was great. And Miss Indiana? The pretty one who didn't know how to not dress and make herself up like an old lady? She looked fantastic after. I wish I could have gotten a better look at some of the others, like Miss Vermont, who had a brain last week but was lacking in the style department. I hope they'll post all the before and after head shots on the Web site.

Miss Rhode Island looked amazing after her makeover...I was surprised not to see her in the top three.

I think the whole top 3/bottom 3 thing is a little pointless, but since it's a reality show, I guess they needed some kind of ending for every episode.

I could understand it being important to know pop culture, but knowing that Borat is from Kazakhstan is no sign of intelligence. Also loved how Miss. New Jersey said in a confessional "some of these girls are the most smartest," then cracked up laughing and corrected herself... ....then she went on to win the intelligence competition. Haha.

There are some affected bitches in all three pageants, but we let them slide because they're considered "hot". Especially if you look at the Miss Universe contest; the Latina girls are for the most part, well prepared, but perhaps too well prepared. They're trained to the tips of their toes, and the result is generally a parody of Latin sexuality and femininity. And it's only going to get worse with MUO's trend of favoring (for the most part) girls with supermodel bodies and nothing in their heart or brain, and that's even worse than the stereotype of pageant girls being plastic and dumb and trite. Basically, I'd like to see a more natural approach to beauty pageants. I just hope that Miss America's girls don't turn into sexy crack whores. What would that be like? "Okay, ladies, in lieu of the final question, your fates hinge on how much blow you can snort up your nose. The person who can snort the most and look the hottest at the same time wins Miss America." (shudders) I don't like the scoring system that Miss America has used for years. Points shouldn't carry over from the prelims. I think that the top 16 should start the semifinals on equal footing, and let the points build from there.
