She looked a bit clown-ish in La Vie En Rose. Of coruse, Edith PILAF (that's how I'm going to say it from now on) looked a bit clownish. Julie Christie is fantastic in Away From Her, but frankly I think the actor who plays her husband owns the movie. I preferred Ellen Page, Cotillard AND Angelina Jolie to Christie's performance. Angelina's performance was very studied but I was eventually convinced by her. Cotillard was of course amazing, but I'm getting a little tired of people-playing-music-icons naturally winning awards. I do think of all the performances, Ellen's Juno will be the one people remember as a 'classic' performance, even if it is a little bit of her own personality and probably less of a stretch. I'm praying that the fifth slot goes to Helena Bonham Carter, if not the best, then at least my favorite female performance of the year, for Sweeney Todd. Blanchett has been gaining momentum for Elizabeth: The Golden Age, so I wouldn't count her out, even though it was a shitty movie. Adams is the likely candidate to steal the fifth slot. Bonham-Carter is not very likely, but I'd love it if she got in. Laura Linney has slipped in the past month or so.

Sam Jackson though or Michael Cera? Meh. I loved Juno but Michael Cera didn't make much of an impact for me. He was adequate.

In the past five years, only ONCE has the DGA lineup been different from the Best Picture lineup at the Oscars. (Dreamgirls was the movie "snubbed", thank god it didn't get in) Crappy nominees: 1. Joel/Ethan Coen for No Country for Old Men (no surprise, love the movie too) 2. Paul Thomas Anderson for There Will Be Blood (not surprised) 3. Julian Schnabel for Diving Bell (not surprised) 4. Sean Penn for Into the Wild (not that surprised, but Into the Wild does NOT deserve to get a BP nod) 5. Tony Gilroy for Michael Clayton (UGH!) It's a real fucking shame Atonement, Sweeney Todd, and Juno may not get all they deserve. My dream list: 1. Atonement 2. Sweeney Todd 3. Juno 4. No Country for Old Men 5.There Will Be Blood/Diving Bell (haven't seen either yet)

Frankly, I dont see HOW it can win best picture. Two ultra-violent Best Picture winners in a row? I think the Oscars will differ in this directors category.

I did love Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd (I can not tell a lie) but I do think Danny boy will win. Best Picture: Seems like 'No Country For Old Men' is close to having this in the bag. I know many people have varied views of 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly' but I thought it was a very well done film. I thought Atonement was over-rated. I'd love to see the actress who played the little sister get nominated but the supposed lead actors were not that great. I preferred the lead actor, James McAvoy sp? in 'The Last King of Scotland' (he should have been in the best sup. actor 'win' category) Kiera Knightly didn't do much for me and I don't think she has earned a best actress nod for the movie. I also don't think the movie has earned 'best movie' status but, it will likely be nominated. I'd love to see Amy Adams grab the 5th spot. I agree with the 4 obvious nominees for best actress. I really liked Julie Christie in 'Away From Her' but I agree that the husband in the film has been totally overlooked. He was very good. I wish Christian Bale had been recognized more for his work in 'Rescue Down' and '3:10 to Yuma'. I'm so sick of George Clooney but he's Hollywood's wet dream. Amy from 'Gone Baby Gone' deserves best S. Actress but I see Cate Blanchett giving her a run for the award in 'I'm Not There' (she was very good). I hope 'Charlie Wilson's War' is not nominated for anything. Tom Hanks...ugh etc...etc... I also loved 'Black Snake Moan' and have not run into anyone who has seen it. I thought Christina Ricci was great in that very 'odd' but entertaining film. The 'Assasination of Jesse James..' was much better than I had predicted and I was happily surprised as I was with the 3:10 to Yuma and I'm not a 'western movie fan' but they were both really good!

Seems like the actors were kind of kissing up to the critics last night, too. They want good reviews.

Marion Cotillard and Cate Blanchett were already shoo-ins for nominations, but were not the front-runners in their categories.

The Oscar nominations were due yesterday, so the results of the GG's won't help a film or actor that wasn't nominated. Although it could give momentum to someone if they do get nominated. I'm hoping Atonement gets snubbed. I'm so sick of the whole love and war epic genre, and movies in general that are made simply to try to win awards.

But I'd really like the Coens to take best director this year. They've made so many great movies, and No Country for Old Men is one of their best.
