CRAVEN -- Best act of the weekend? Randy Owen. The classic Alabama material sounded perfect in the Big Valley ... Best new catchphrase? Merry Christmas and Happy Craven ... Most shocking sight? A standing 69 on Main Street.

Best gig within a gig? There were two: Big Kenny Alphin and John Rich jamming deep into the night with Harry Luge in the backstage VIP tent, and The Poverty Plainsmen playing an impromptu campground gig for friends and family Saturday afternoon.

Speaking of The Plainsmen, singer Mark Smith had an interesting adventure with a golf cart on Thursday night -- and he didn't even have his clubs!

Most people think they're not Reba fans -- until they see her. McEntire is a true pro and the absolute queen of showbiz country. That remains true even if you don't like her TV show ... I always thought country music was renowned for its real people: It seems clear that Reba, Lorrie Morgan and Ronnie Milsap keep the plastic surgery racket in Nashville flourishing.

Speaking of plastic surgery, I'd like to place my 2008 Jamboree request now for Kenny Rogers.

The Huber clan sure knows how to throw a camping party. Ribs, wings, curly taters, brownies and very strong beverages. Thanks folks! Oh, and everyone knows I love cougars, but Reba and Gretchen have nothing on your Aunt Marcie ... If Saturday evening's Big & Rich performance was truly a welcome return, popular opinion suggests that the group's 2006 show here was better -- much better. Maybe it's true what they say about the first time!

Fans don't want to hear it, but Carrie Underwood is a complete beast when it comes to dealing with the media -- and just about anything else. Everything in the backstage area became way harder than it needed to be once the one-album karaoke diva showed up. High-maintainence artists and handlers often receive quick lessons in shorts careers ...
If Reba ever wanted to act like a diva, hey, at least she's earned the right!

You have never seen sideburns until you've seen the drummer for the Kentucky Headhunters ... Terry Ree was raving about the Headhunters, and with good reason: the group's performance Saturday was a perfect wakeup call.

Don't you just love Shevy Smith? If there's any justice in the country music industry, you'll be hearing plenty more from this sweetheart from Kansas.

Speaking of the beautiful Ms. Smith, most promising query of the weekend: "Who the hell is that?" John Rich asked in the VIP tent as Shevy and her young band dove into their after-party set. Later, one of Nashville's most prolific songwriters pulled up a chair in the front, giving his full attention to Shevy as she belted out one of her originals. That, Ms. Underwood, is how the real stars get discovered

A last word on Underwood: The clarity of her voice was rather suspicious at times during her set. She has a great voice, and it's strong enough, but when her microphone is miles away from her mouth, it shouldn't be that strong, if you get my drift.

The Craven uniform of a bikini and cowboy boots for women and short shorts with a beer box on the head for men is a good one.

If you have a great time, you'll always return: The huge Sunday midday lineups on Main Street were to purchase $109 tickets to next year's festival. All 2008 of the specially-priced ducats we're sold out as fast as the orders could be processed. If I were a betting man I would expect Keith Urban to grace the Craven Country Jamboree main stage next year.

And isn't it about time Brooks & Dunn played these parts?
