And remember, Chesney touched off a country music furor last year when, after winning Entertainer of the Year for the fourth straight time, he criticized the Academy for allowing the award to be chosen by fans voting on the Internet. "I don't think its right that they picked the one award that means the most, that all the artists sacrificed the most for, and turned it into a … sweepstakes," Chesney said at the time. Those remarks ignited a furor in the country music world, prompting some wags to suggest that he should give the trophy back. The suspense ends on Sunday night at the 44th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, which will be handed out at a ceremony hosted by Reba McEntire at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and broadcast live on CBS. Since I was not sure why there was another award show so much like the CMA's I did a google and found this ------------- Even diehard country music fans are hard-pressed to explain the difference between the awards bestowed by the Country Music Association, which presents kudos next Tuesday, and the Academy of Country Music, which passes out honors every May. Both are given by industry organizations, both are currently telecast by CBS and they have many of the same winners - and the same voters. "The average country fan sitting in Spartanburg, South Carolina, probably gets very confused whenever one of these award shows comes on TV," says Peter Cooper, music writer for Nashville newspaper The Tennessean. "He probably thinks, 'I thought this was on just six months ago!' "Today there's very little difference between the two groups," he notes, "but they started out as very distinct organizations." CMA was founded first, in Nashville in 1958, just one year after the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences was formed in Los Angeles. The association's chief mission was to serve as an industry think tank and networking organization for Nashville music makers, so it didn't rush to pass out awards. The first country music kudos were actually bestowed in 1965 by an upstart new Academy of Country Music, which was formed one year earlier by country artists who had ditched honky-tonk Nashville for glam Hollywood. By 1967, CMA was passing out prizes, too. "The ACM was formed to support West Coast-based country music," adds Cooper. "Capital Records was out there and there were people like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, who didn't like living in Nashville and the ACM was an organization that gave them a fair shake." West Coasters like Haggard dominated the early ACM awards, while Nashville faves Johnny Cash and Charlie Pride swept the CMAs. Nowadays both groups favor the same artists, like Kenny Chesney and Alan Jackson. With one odd exception: Toby Keith, who's probably been punished by CMA members for not making Nashville his home. "Toby is the main difference in terms of artists who get votes from one group but not the other," Cooper observes. "ACM is friendly to him, but the CMAs continue to shut him out." Another key difference: the ACM Awards are staged in Las Vegas while the CMA Awards usually stay home in Nashville - except this year. The CMAs head to New York City for the first time ever for their kudocast next Tuesday. The program will surely be a big ratings deal in the big city. Traditionally, the CMAs have more viewers than the ACMs: 14 million compared to 12 million last year. Both are so popular that they're aired during sweeps months (May and November) and sometimes one or both beat the Nielsen ratings scored by the Primetime Emmys. The CMAs and ACMs are probably even responsible for the modern explosion of award shows on TV. Prior to the late 1960s the only awardcasts were the Oscars, Emmys and Tonys. At that point the CMAs nabbed a spot in prime time, but NBC crammed it into its regular weekly "Kraft Music Hall." The Grammys only existed on TV in a rather dull, taped one-hour special billed as "Best on Record." The modern music awards show as we know it today was not yet created when "The Partridge Family" and "Hee Haw" were on the tube. That all changed in 1971, when the Grammys went live in a stand-alone awardcast. When Paul McCartney showed up to accept an award for the busted-up Beatles, the crowd and TV viewing audience went crazy and ABC had a hit on its hands. Foolishly, however, the alphabet network gave up the broadcast rights one year later when the Grammys wanted to move their show to Nashville. CBS not only grabbed the rights, but also launched a live, stand-alone CMA show. The ACMs were launched in 1972, too. Suddenly, there were three music-award shows on TV at the same time and all of them scored socko ratings. Inevitably, TV network programmers must've thought: "Hmmm … if one award show is good and three is great, then - wow - even more must be fantastic!" Thus were born the American Music Awards by a revenge-plotting ABC soon thereafter, and then new kudos sprang up from Billboard, MTV, VH1, Soul Train, etc. And there are new country music awards, too, including the CMT (Country Music Television) and Canadian Country Music awards. The broadcast rights to the original two biggies are still considered such plums that ABC just swiped the CMA rights away from CBS for more than $9 million. ABC will begin telecasting the CMAs next November when they return to Nashville. Meantime, CBS plans to hype its continuing commitment to the ACMs by airing a special tribute to the academy's 40th anniversary on Dec. 3. Most were interested in her pregnancy than her performance. She should have sung something in it's entirety from the new cd not part of one and part of two others from old cds. Definite fucked opportunity there. But according to HDD her sales would have been about 25 thousand to 50 thousand less in her first week depending on if you believe their high or low estimation. Still good enough for number 1. By the way did you know she had the number 1 cd for 2 weeks in a row? Let's put it in simple terms. Week 75 for Carrie's sophomore cd and she's been in and out of the top 50 numerous times. Week 73 for Kelly's sophomore cd saw it fall out of the top 30 for the first time. Carrie is definitely suffering from a sophomore slump. Kelly with her sophomore cd, not so much. Since this is Carrie's thread and not Kelly's; although it sure is hard to tell sometimes with how much the carrietards like to talk about her here; How shitty would Carrie's first weeks sales have been if she didn't have christmas pimpage or a rerelease? Or multiple times on idol even? Probably pretty shitty since she sold 1/3 of her total cd's to date in the first 3 weeks her cd was out. It's called promo. Every artist gets it in different degrees. You also know right now that sales are in the shitter. Even with two huge name releases last month, Kelly and U2, sales were still down something like 25% from the year before. The better question is; is christmas sales so important to carrie that the two christmas season make up almost 2/3's of her total sales? Reality check is both Carrie and Kelly are superstars that are doing well with their current cd's but have done better with prior cd's to date. The big difference is Carrie is at the end of her cd run and Kelly is just starting hers so no one knows how that will end - will it be with breakaway type sales or more my disaster. I think it will fall somewhere in between. The unfortunate thing for Carrie is that she peaked with her idol cd and will forever be labeled as having a sophomore slump. If the next cd sells even less v carnival ride she'll never hear the end of having peaked with idol like so many other idols have done. I predict she will pull out all the stops with the next cd and even though Carrie has expressed disdain for crossover her management will take a page from the Taylor Swift handbook and remix the shit out of her songs in an attempt to get her another crossover hit. Which isn't a bad thing atleast for me because then maybe I'll like Carrie like I enjoyed Some Hearts. It worked with me for Kelly after her shitty cd. Carrie and Kelly both had a shitty cd. It happens. Doesn't mean all the cd's to follow have to be shitty too. Kelly proved that.

She won't hit SH numbers but Martina/Faith/etc are not hitting them either. Carries voice is better than ever and she finally can perform on stage. That should also just improve with each tour. She's still just 4 years into this industry and has gotten about every award she could dream of. but Carrie ain't going anywhere any time soon. As long as their are song writers they will be a song she can perform like few others. Taylor can't sing one song off of Carries song list because she does not have the range. They are two different artists. Taylor is a teen pop idol and reaping the benefits of the audience she crosses over into and the teens that love her music. The same ones that love miley and the jonus brothers and throw in some real country lovers and you have a pretty big base but they can't really be compared just like Carrie and Kelly can't except for one thing that they are past Idol winners but singing in a different genre. Granted Kelly did try the country audience with Reba but that didn't really stick as kellys fans seem to wanted the pop kelly.
