According to this report, Gabon was the 14^th most popular show this broadcast season and Tocantins was 18^th. Last year's report had China as 12^th and FvF as 17^th. Both reports list AI twice for its two shows but last year's includes four DWTS shows while this year's only includes two. Therefore, the actual program rankings are: Gabon 12^th, Tocantins 16^th, China 8^th and FvF 13^th. The decline of 3-4 spots is understandable given that (in Sucks' general opinion at least), China was better than Gabon and FvF was better than Tocantins.

Though Survivor is declining in the rankings, the decline isn't bad when compared with shows such as Desperate Housewives (fell 4 actual spots), Grey's Anatomy (fell 4 actual spots) and House (fell 10 actual spots). It should be noted, however, that other CBS shows such as NCIS, Two and a Half Men and CSI: Miami have all leapfrogged Survivor in the past year, in addition to the debut of The Mentalist. This may diminish Survivor's value to CBS.

Tocantins is swimming in the same water as Without a Trace and Eleventh Hour, which both got canned. At least Survivor costs far less to make; according to this report, Fiji cost only $6 million to produce in its entirety, whereas Eleventh Hour cost $2.3 million per episode and $4 million for the pilot. This article states that $2.3 million per episode, or $50 million dollars for a whole season, is usual for a network drama. Therefore, Survivor has a significant cost advantage over its competitors, as two seasons (26 episodes) will cost less than a quarter of the total costs for dramas. Of course, the figures I used were pre-HD and the production costs have probably doubled in that time. Even so, Survivor still costs less than half of what dramas cost.

Given the ridiculously small cost of Survivor, the optimists in this thread appear to be right. Survivor should continue for at least another 5 or 6 seasons, if not more.

I totally agree. The last 4 seasons have been edited really well and have turned out to be great series. China was the first season of the new era.

Uh....no. Anything that comes after ASS will be post-ASS. Call it a "new era" all you want, but even if there are 63 seasons, everything after season 8 will still be post-ASS.
