Posts: 6011 (02/03/08 2:45 PM) Guttersnipe Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	some of you may be acquainted with my pooch, dolly. for those of you that aren't she's half pomeranian and half beagle. she has 3 coats of fur, two of them being like rabbit fur. she tangles very very easily and i trim her butt and behind her ears to prevent dreadlocks. however, i spend hours and hours every week brushing her and vacuuming dog hair off stuff. it seems like no matter how much i brush, she continues to shed. which is fine. but, has anyone ever used either of the following?: it's called a 'rake'. it looks like it would be painful if used improperly. or: it's called a 'shedding blade' and i don't even understand what one would do with it. i don't mind the brushing but she has a new thing (which i'm also looking for advice on), she digs herself. i thought it was fleas but it's really not. and she doesn't have any dry patchy spots that would indicate 'hot spots' she just digs and digs. she's ripped a nipple off and has chewed herself red in some places. any recommendations? i'd prefer lotion/gel type things as her stomache is sensitive and i don't want to chance feeding her something that will make her...uh. well you know. thanks! Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	There is a spray called Bitter Yuk you can use. You can get it at Pet Smart. My pom used to shed everywhere, no matter how much we brushed and combed. We would vacuum twice a day. You can also buy an additional anti-itch spray. They are all dog friendly. An oatmeal based shampoo and conditioner will help with itching as well. I use the once a month flea treatment from the vet, so I couldn't tell you about the natural stuff.

Yep, they can't stand the taste. The shedding blade is far less worrisome than a groomer, IMO. Unless you have a kid using it.

My friend's maltese was chewing her front paws until they were bloody. They had the poor thing wearing one of those big cone things around her head all the time to keep her from chewing. They finally found out that it was an ingredient in her dog food that was causing it. Like an allergy or something. When I had my bulldog I tried every single gimmick on the market for shedding. Nothing worked.

Do you bathe her a lot? If so, she may be getting hot spots from where she doesn't get completely dry - most pom owners blow dry their dogs after a bath. And frequesnt baths do dry out their skins, leading to more hot spots, and in the long run actually make them smellier. I bathe my dogs very seldom (usually once or twice a year unless they;re going to a show), since bathing strips the natural oils from their coats and skins

Posts: 6019 (02/03/08 3:54 PM) Guttersnipe Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	cbr, those don't scrape the pooches skin? i don't bath her often and i never ever blow dry her. in the winter she gets bathed maybe once every other month and in the summer once every other week with shampoo and a spray down at least once a week as she's a dirt magnet. i'm looking at the sprays, they seem to all contain the same types of stuff AND alchohol. i may just make my own to ensure there is no alchohol.

No offense but Iams is shit. It may not bother her belly but all that corn could definitely be making her itch. There are plenty of good dog foods out there. You just might have to do a little shopping around until you find a new one that works.
