The clams being eaten on this show (and past seasons) are called Tridacnid clams, more commonly known as Giant clams. The whole of the Subfamily, Genus and Species are listed as threatened under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), specifically under Appendixes II . Appendixes II encompasses 33033 species as of Feb. 12, 2008. This is the same classification given some much more "popular animals" such as the Rhinoceros, Hippopotamuses, Arctocephalus spp. (Fur Seals-Sea-lions), Loxodonta africana (Elephant). Yet no one seems to care that these animals are being eaten by people trying to win money on a TV show trying to make money.

Tridacnid clams are a traditional food for the indigenous people that inhabit their (Tridacnid clams) range and should be left for the inhabitants of these islands as a subsistence food source, not transplants trying to win more money than some of these villages will see in a life time.

Tridacnid clams have been virtually wiped out in a large part of their range because of Poaching for the Sushi market and over harvesting. Over the last 40 years there have been many programs set up to culture Tridacnid clams for both the food trade and Marine Ornamental trade. Most of these programs have been shut down because of lack of funding. It would be nice to see a Corporation such as CBS that is using these threatened animals as part of a money-making TV show, contribute to some of these aquaculture facilities to insure that these beautiful animals are around for future generations to see.

How about we see a "Survivor Alaska" and give all the contestants a club and have them stand over an air hole in the ice and club seals?
