Michael is the smoke monster, too.I still think that spoiler is a mix-up based on Harold Perrineau being in the movie Smoke. But, eh, maybe that's the inside joke. It certainly explains why he and Vincent hung out for a while. |

I don't know if this has been discussed or not, but I was struck with an idea tonight for some reason while thinking about LOST.
We all remember at the end of S2 when, in exchange for Kate/Jack/Sawyer, Michael was given a boat and allowed to navigate his way to rescue. However, upon further recollection, I couldn't remember if Ben mentioned anything specifically about running into a freighter or not, so I went back and watched the scene in question. Upon further review, I found that he did NOT specifically mentione running into a freighter or a ship, but he did say something to the effect of, "If you follow this direction (giving a compass bearing), you will find rescue." At first, a lot of us assumed this was merely the only direct line out of the sort of "forcefield" of the island, or what have you. NOW, knowing where we are currently at, I'm inclined to believe that Ben KNEW the freighter was coming in search of the island, and in response, he fortunately was able to send Michael out to "meet" the freighter and get "rescued." Now, this begs the question: If Ben KNEW Michael would find the freighter, how did he know that Michael would then subsequently become a "spy" for him? The answer is: I dunno. My only logical explanation is that, somehow, a deal was struck between Ben and Michael to where Michael would ensure that the freighters returned Walt, and in exchange, Michael would, using the on-board communications, communicate with Ben on the island about things going on there. I don't know if any of this is relevant, if any of it makes sense, OR if Michael were to ACTUALLY be the "contact" on the freighter. I just thought it was an interesting perspective to look at it from to make a case FOR Michael being the contact. |

Actually, I still think that's the way through whatever it is, especially after Daniel gave the helicopter pilot specific coordinates and told him he had to follow those exact coordinates. But, it is possible that he knew the freighter was coming and would also be headed towards those coordinates. Anyone care enough to see if the coordinates Ben gave are the same ones Daniel gave? Or did Daniel just say "Make sure you take the same ones"? |

"Live Together, Die Alone" (2x24) GALE: Good, then you're going to take this boat and follow a compass bearing of 325, and if you do that exactly, you and your son will find rescue. (Source) "The Economist" (3x04) DANIEL: (carrying suitcase) Hey, Frank. Frank? (quietly) Just one thing. Just be sure that you follow the same exact bearing that we came in on. No matter what. By that, I mean no matter what. Just - just stay on it. (Source) |

Thanks Wisc. I was assuming that Daniel was talking about the same bearing. It would make sense, but who knows.

I assume that he is too. Of course the bearing could possibly fluctuate over time. But I do believe there is a sliver of an entry point into 'island
space'

Yeah, there'd be no point to emphasize the helicopter also follow a particular bearing, if it was simply the way to the Freighter. The pilot would just
fly back to the Freighter, any which way.
So Ben would have had to tell Michael to go that bearing whether the Freighter was there or not. In order to for Ben to know the Freighter was there, Ben would need another spy within the Freighties organization, either also on the boat or at it's homebase. Which begs the question of why would he need Michael to become a 2nd spy, if he's already got it covered? |

I'm having a hard time supporting the Michael is the spy theory...
I think that if the people who are looking for Ben knew enough about the area to have some idea as to where the island is, they would probably find it weird that some random man and his son were floating around on a fishing boat in that obscure of an area (Sawyer even told Michael that that isn't the type of boat to take off shore more than about 100 miles). It seems like the first thing they would've thought would have been, "I bet Ben stuck him out here to find us and spy on us...." and at the very least, they probably wouldn't share any sort of relevant information around him. Although, I can't think of a better suggestion as to who it is. It IS lost.....maybe they're both invisible or something and the freighties don't know they're on the freighter. |

Minkowski said Sayid and Des must have had a friend on the boat (whoever opened the door for them). Sounds like a good case for the man being Michael.

It could have been the helicopter pilot for all we know. He didn't seem to care much for the rest of the boaties.
Didn't the note the copter pilot was looking at say 305, not 325? |

The only reason I'm not sure that it's someone we've met before is that IF it is someone who was on the island, wouldn't the freighter people
be a little more forthcoming with that information? I mean, Ben sure didn't talk to this person like he was being held PRISONER by the Freighters, so I
dunno.

After the preview for next week, the odds are now 3 to 5 that it's Mikey.

Fingers crossed that it's one of the flashback characters like Nadia, Kate's mom, Boone's mom, Sawyer's ex/Kate's friend, Aaron's
daddy, Kate's ex-husband etc. :)

It's a given that Mike is returning. I don't believe he's been on that boat all this time. An entire episode (which I'm sure Michael will have)
taking place just on the freighter would be boring as crap to me. SO, he would have an off island flashback combined with a freighter flashback.. that
would be cool. I'm confused as to why the hell he'd get back home then go back to the island, but maybe it's all about Walt? Maybe Walt is the
reason he goes back - like possibly Walt is threatened - again. *sigh* I sure as heck don't have this all figured out, but Michael was the first one to
come to mind when Ben said he had a spy. I still believe that.
