Truer words have never been spoken. I live in Manhattan and for a few years I worked in Times Square. I have never wanted to murder more people than when I worked in Times Square.

Again, I live in Las Vegas, and while I avoid the strip for many of the same reasons stated above, I do not hate any tourist nor want any of them dead. They bring so much money into our city and because of them I don't have to pay any state income taxes. I also get every touring act you can possibly think of passing through town, and I also get some great restaurants and even some Broadway shows are reproduced for us.

When I go to NYC I am as much a tourist as the next guy, and I would like to think New Yorkers appreciate that I am there to support their city, their culture and their economy. At least I know the Broadways actors and dancers appreciate me. I guess those of you who foolishly choose to work in Times Square despite your seething hatred for us can SUCK IT!

I find this entire post to be ridiculous.

1) Tourists in Manhattan are nearly as about as old as Manhattan itself so if you are sick of the tourists, you are sick of Manhattan.

2) We ALL know what it's like to deal with tourists, because even as tourists, we must deal with each other.

3) People stopping in the middle of sidwalks to talk or take a picture or to stare at something happens EVERYWHERE, not just in New York. It happens on every crowded sidewallk, it happens in every mall, in every amusement park, in every grocery store, in schools, or what have you. AND it happens with folks who are residents, not just the tourists. Go to any crowded city, away from the tourist area, and you'll run into the same inconsiderate people.

4) You cannot control where MTV puts its studio but you certainly CAN and DO control where you work. This is a free country and you can choose to work for a company that resides in Times Square or you can choose not to. YOU control that. Since Times Square is the most tourist populated area of NYC and has been for decades you consciously made a choice to work there AND to deal with the tourists, so DEAL WITH IT...or quit. But don't blame the tourists or want them dead. You knew what you were getting into.

5) An attitude like yours deserves no respect. And it's an attitude like yours that assumes that tourists do not respect you. Who are you to know who a tourist respects and who they do not. You are not better than anyone else in NYC, and that includes tourists. Whether a person is there to live or to visit, they are a part of the NYC community.


Be annoyed. Be as annoyed as you want. You have the right and I can understand and agree that tourists are annoying.

But being annoyed is not what you originally said. You said you never wanted to murder more people than when you worked in Times Square.

That, my friend, is where you come across as the idiot.


I would kindly suggest that you, as a resident of Manhattan, when feeling "annoyed" please remember that tourists do contribute to the greatness of your city. Whether it be to your economy or to your culture, they do contribute, and they have a significant impact to the appeal and lure of the Big Apple. You should take it as a compliment that people who have limited funds and time choose to spend their money and their time in your great city. You should think about the times when you were a tourist, in London or Los Angeles or in Paris (wherever you may have gone), when you have been guilty of the same crimes that you detest. The sidewalk was built for citizens and tourists alike.

When I go to the strip (I am the one who lives in Vegas remember) I try to put myself in their mode and to be patient. The bright lights and towering buildings are not commonplace where they may live and it can be overwhelming to them. They are not on a time schedule and they are there to enjoy themselves. They probably work hard in their jobs and they value what little time they get to be in a timefree/carefree mode. Who am I to take that feeling away from them? Who am I to make commands of them to get out of my way because I did not allow adequate time to deal with the tourists who I know are going to be there? English may not be their first language and they may not be able to read the signs like you and I can. They may even need help and if I have time to offer it I do.

Once I was lost in Paris. I stood on a street corner staring at a map. Parisians have a worse reputation than New Yorkers when it comes to being helpful, but a very kind Parisian business woman (she was in a suit and carrying a briefcase) stopped and took the time to ask me if I needed help. I was so greatful and she, alone, changed my view of Parisians and she taught me a great lesson that day. I hope you can one day learn that lesson too.
