Well this is truly brilliant and could not come, I believe at a better time in our own history.

I have been having great discussions with regards to the Constitution and its almost idolatry status as the epitome of governmental modern law today. Yet of course its is often so cavalierly mentioned as something to be amended to pursue the very agenda they feared...the further enjoining of church and state. And yet without the ability to amend this sacrosanct document we would have no votes for women, no freedom of slaves but then again we would not have the illegality of liquor and its subsequent redaction. So imperfect as it is and certainly as thought out and debated upon as it was during its creation, I would have no doubt that its creators would have welcomed argument and debate and ultimately amendment as the most critical of rights to establish truth and freedom for all.

I also see why the Revolution and our Independence is so widely emulated and so revered. I have no doubt that countries in Africa, Eastern European nations and even the Middle East see that rag tag rebels and the outspoken voices of farmers could have such significance in successfully ceding from what was then the most powerful and wealthy countries in the world at the time which certainly must be a factor in their own struggles to make a democratic nation. And how frustrating it is to see it fail with so much more information and opportunity to assist the matter. Perhaps that too contributes to the resentment and envy that often marks their hostility toward the United States. They do not see its imperfections only its outcome.

And yet here we have become so jaded so saddened by the current state of politics, of its corruption, its ineffectiveness and its seeming disconnect from its citizens that we no longer even share the same passions, commitment or desire of these same people who are very much who we are now... just people wanting to be free to live as they see fit. We have so forgotten that state of mind, that simple quest that a few voices carried loudly and far and change was possible.

I have never felt the romanticized notion of America and its history perhaps I read Howard Zinn and I see the flaws but I am still here and I think I would be the loudest voice in the Congress if it was about making this country a better place. I think hope for that is why I still vote, still bitch and still think that every now and then there are good people doing good work and that makes up for some of the errors of our ways. But I wonder if there are enough voices to parallel those men today?

The relationship between John and Abigail (our first feminist) is something again for ANOTHER series frankly. Laura Linney is amazing.. and she brings resonance and reality as what it must have been to be that woman behind that man but in reality very much aside her man. They were obviously deeply in love and truly committed with an emotional and intellectual resonance that I cannot imagine what it would be like for her to be separate for three years with so little communication. I wonder if that type of commitment, partnership and true devotion is possible today?

John was a fascinating man and complex... how he valued his wife's role and how obviously recognized by those around him as to who she was and her own importance and yet she would not live to see a vote in her country which she sacrificed much for its very origin.

I also watched the "making of" and again just the eye for detail, the sense of reality obviously lend to the imagery but also the gravitas for the actors to take this project seriously and respectfully.

Truly I am thrilled to see this and hope they do Benjamin Franklin as well. It is time for the reverence of history to be replaced with relevance.
