Spinoffs are always tricky, and this one is basically a soap opera with sci-fi trappings. Not a recipe for big ratings. But I will certainly be tuning in regardless.

Fortunately the final episodes of BSG begin airing in January, and there is a new 10-part webisode series that has just begun.

Apparently, it will be from the toaster's perspective about why they nuked the colonies. This could be one fracking mega-transition to them day of yore on Caprica. Anyhow, I bet it's the set up to the Adama Drama.

On it's own though I thought it was a strong pilot. It really reminds me of Terminator TSCC, slowish, thoughtful drama with sci-fi elements. And of course, there are some really interesting nuggets of mythology which apply to BSG. I am excited for the show to start. I hope the audience is receptive to it. I've read this is more the direction that the revamped and ridiculously named SyFy wishes to go. I welcome it.

But I guess we should observe spoiler etiquette until the official broadcast (speaking of which, when is it? Date announced yet?) Spoiler [+] What AWESOME production values! This looked a profesionally made as anything SciFi oops SyFy has ever done. Best looking toasters since the mothership full of No. 8's. I'm a little annoyed that they're portraying monotheists as terrorists, given the train bombings in London and Madrid. Far better to have them as an underground group like they wound up in the end. And it's a little too pat to have the "know we know" moment of finding out why 6 and her buddies were so adamant about taking up that cause to cause the wars, not to mention converting Baltar, but I'm OK with it for now. Prequels always need to find a seam to mine, and this is well done for what it is. I bet it plays out very well. I get the Terminator vibe, too. Dr. Graystone might as well be Dr. Dyson, although Dr. Frankenstein might be the better mad scientist. So did Zoe's copy get extinguished from the database completely and then dowloaded into the toaster? Is she stuck in there forever? Imagine what would happen if Jit got plopped into a Centurion. The Jitenshites would finally prevail around here. Overall gorgeiously done. And this is just the pilot. Now Moore & Eick get to really play around with their ideas without worrying about who's the skinjob and who ain't.

I had it sitting around for weeks and kept putting off because I didn't think I was in the right head space to really sit down and watch it. But when I finally did, I actually really liked it. Some of the acting wasn't the best but the plot kept me interested and it just LOOKS really nice. Pretty stylish, great light, decent-enough effects for a pilot, and Zoe's friend Lacy had a nice rack.
