Begin the countdown to the changing of the host. Conan was a guest last night, and while the exchange was civil and funny, there was an under current of
awkward.

About four years ago Leno announced he would be retiring in 2009. NBC said Conan would replace him. Now that 2009 is just around the corner, Leno is said to
be having second thoughts.

WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?!
Jay Leno goes to Primetime?!Dec 8, 2008, 09:17 PM | by Nicholas Fonseca Categories: TV Biz
The move comes just after Jeff Zucker told a luncheon in New York City on Monday that the network-which announced staff cuts and a total reorganization of its structure in recent days-could eventually have to program fewer hours in its weekly schedule. It also saves NBC the cost of producing hour-long dramas for the 10 p.m. slot., a problem its faced in recent months with now-canceled series like My Own Worst Enemy and Lipstick Jungle. Most important for NBC, though, it keeps Leno, a proven ratings earner, in its stable at a time when it needs him; there was heavy speculation that Leno would be courted by ABC (potentially replacing Nightline and setting up a three-way battle with O'Brien and David Letterman). It also gives NBC a shot at airing that 21st-century variety format that Rosie O'Donnell tried--and failed--to bring back last month. |

That's crazy. Talk about talk show overload.

Smart move on NBC's part. Once Conan fails in that time slot (as he surely will), they can pop Leno right back into it. NBC has a lot of bad television
in its future.

They wouldn't actually have a problem if they had shows on at 10pm that were, you know, good.
My Own Worst Enemy?-Why hide a spy inside the body of a bumbling idiot that can't protect themselves. Lipstick Jungle?-Sex in the City 2.0 with bad characters and worse stories Law & Order SVU?-Only shwo at 10 doing well Law & Order original?-Good show but ratings are down. Go for the stunt casting that SVU uses. ER?-Limping along for YEARS and only has ratings now because it's leaving And the rest of the line up, ugh. Kath & Kim-worst thing on the network & I'm counting Knight Rider Knight Rider-Take a cheesey show from the 80's and actually make it worse than the original My Name is Earl-No where near the show that it was during the first season, the best season. The whole fucking network is just a mess Get rid of Zucker |

Poor Conan, Jay and the network have been fucking with him ever since they made that deal. The funniest part is that Jay's keeping the Tonight Show set and
Conan has to go get some other set to do....The Tonight Show <3.
Seriously though, Jay Leno needs to stop being on television 17 years ago. |

Seriously, what shows does NBC have that are any good?
-- Chuck -- 30 Rock -- The Office -- Life That's 3 whole hours of TV. Throw in the Law & Orders and you have a whopping 5 hours. Fill in the rest with crap Deal Or No Deal episodes. The rest of it can go to hell, even Heroes. Luckily things are so bad that shows like Chuck and Life will probably be given full runs. ER, Medium, Crusoe, Knight Rider, Kath & Kim, My Name Is Earl, The Biggest Loser -- what a sorry lot.

I'm quite sure that this will be the end of LIFE, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and probably MEDIUM.

My Name is Earl is likely headed for the scrap heap as well.
NBC admits it can't afford to program 22 hours of weekly primetime scripted series anymore. Talk shows are cheaper to produce than scripted shows. I read that the average network drama costs $3 million per episode. So that's $15 million per week for Mon-Fri at 10PM. Leno's show will probably cost no more than $2 million for the entire week. Even when you throw in Leno's $30 million in salary, that's still a bargain basement price compared to scripted hourlong dramas. Expect them to also keep "supersizing" their reality shows like they're doing with the 2 hour Apprentice episodes this season. This is just the first step in the networks changing over to talk show/reality show format. Scripted shows will migrate to the cable networks. Look at ABC - in the past month they've cancelled Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money, and the just ended Boston Legal. CSI and some procedural shows will survive. Serialized storytelling on the major networks is done. There are too many other options out there for entertainment now. The networks will need to streamline their budgets, and the best way to do that is by switching to a talk show format (kind of like AM radio did).

I also think this is the beginning of the end of serialized dramas on major networks, which will be unfortunate. Oh well. Cable series have been earning most of the awards anyway. |
