No not at all. My comments were based on the heavy criticism that S3 took at the time it was aired (albeit some was 9/11 backlash)

Africa, Guatemala, and Fiji all suffered due to their environment, the difference with Fiji being that the dehydration problem was producer-made, not natural.

Guatemala was harsh but there were food sources available. Since the howler monkeys are primates, I'm sure there was fruit and edible roots (like tapioca) that the contestants could survive on. We did see them attempt to catch fish at Nakum and eating minnows, termites and ants at Yaxha. However, the conditions in Survivor Africa were next to impossible for human survival. The contestants were prohibited from hunting wildlife and the grazing vegetation that was there coud be digested by elephants and giraffes but probably not by humans. That season they departed from the original Survivor concept that the contestants work together as a society to survive on their own and both Probst and Burnett have admitted that it was a mistake.

The problem is never food. It's water and dehydration that really just sap all the fun and enjoyment out of the experience for the people playing the game.

My gripe with Survivor Africa has to do with the fact that it is the ony season where the conditions were such that the contestants could not survive on their own as it was not possible for the contestants to get food for themselves. The only food that they had was provided by Survivor production (corn meal, canned goods). That deviated from the origina concept of Survivor. The format that season was more like an extremey harsh version of Big Brother.

you do realize that up until Marquesas, all the food and supplies were provided by the production, it was even a huge issue in Australia when they ran out of rice. Survivor Africa was a fine season that was hardly a 'failure' as you might consider it to be. the heavy criticism for Africa was indeed all just 9/11 backlash and shouldn't really count in retrospect. The only real 'failure' seasons were the ones that centered on in-game twists like Fiji. And Africa came at a time when the Survivor locations were all about extreme harsh conditions that kept escalating with each season (remember, Africa was originally gonna be followed by Arabia). If anything, Africa was the first travelogue season that heavily showcased the location's culture.
