It's not insanity, per se. It does require a lack of intellect, but like any scam, it just requires the willing complicity of the 'victim'. They want to believe in something, feel like a part of something, for some sort of gain. Whether it's a spiritual leader, or that somebody really is going to transfer them funds from a Nigerian prince, it's based a chance to be part of something greater than themselves without actually having to do anything. Okay, maybe that is a bit insane, but it's a much more mundane insanity than we would usually equate with actual mental illness. It's voluntary and self-deluding, but as shown by the ridiculous number of people that let themselves get ripped off every year, it's quite commonplace in virtually every part of our culture.
