The news is now reporting that 50,000 are possibly dead and that it's the worst tragedy since the '04 tsunami. Are we still considered the saviors of the world and thus obligated to send our money, help and resources to assist these ungrateful bastards when we couldn't even help our own people in New Orleans?

I can understand the pain that they must be going thru, but why can't the European Union take the lead on this kind of shit instead of us? They have a stronger economy than us and have been itching to be the primary world power for decades. How about China? They're neighbors to Burma. Why don't THEY do something constructive instead of killing peaceful Tibetan monks?

It makes me sad and it's a tragedy but I don't remember other countries sending us money to help with 9/11 clean-up or to help out the homeless and hungry in Katrina.

We need to take care of our own before we go tossing away money to other countries.

I agree, especially with something as complicated with Myanmar, but just for the record, the EU did send millions of dollars in aid for Katrina, but the U.S. government wouldn't distribute it. Hundreds of tons of NATO rations were sent by Britain, for instance, and they were all burned. Other aid was sent and not used. It made me really pissed off, so I remember the attempt.

EU countries are sending food and other supplies to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, after the US asked the EU and Nato for emergency help at the weekend.

Germany and the UK have already flown in more than 500,000 food rations. France is flying tents, generators and water purifying plants from Martinique, and a Dutch frigate is taking medicine and helicopters to New Orleans. Greece has offered two cruise ships to help house thousands of homeless people for several months. Tiny Luxembourg has 1,000 camp beds and 2,000 blankets at the ready, and Sweden is providing equipment to restore mobile phone networks.
