Posts: 5756 (06/16/08 6:27 AM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Spring Awakening is a good show, Grey Gardens is a fantastic show. 20 years from now, everyone will look back and think "WTF were they thinking giving the award to Spring Awakening?" Same way they look back and think "Two Gentlemen of Verona over Follies? Thats nuts!" And how long a show runs has zero to do with its quality or whether it deserves to win. Spring Awakening won because it got the late hype and will be able to tour, something Grey Gardens would never do. When Cheyenne is doing Damn Yankees at Encores! Curtis Holbrook will be coming back to fill in as Sonny. I will be going to see it then, as I miss Curtis in Xanadu, though he was good in Saved.

Disappointed in the Rent reunion.. and where was Jesse? Based on the musical numbers I saw.. Passing Strange: Bleah.. have no desire - absolutely hate the lead. Xanadu.. was hoping for something much more fun. In the Heights might be a good show.. liked the number. Cry Baby looks decent. Faith Prince was awful. Tony Roberts: looked like it hurt him to sing. Megan Mullaly.. no wonder Frankenstein wasn't nominated.(I also saw a performance of "Roll in the Hay" and felt it was forcing laughs from the audience.. like Megan's number last night and I really like Megan.). I've heard really bad things about Mermaid and seeing her on "wheelies" proves they were right. Mermaid is a bomb. I cry at Circle of Life and it was so good to see that number. (and I am the only person I know who wouldn't pay to see the live show again.. I hated Lion King the musical). I think Whoopie did a great job, I think she hosted and knew when to get off stage. Last night was the first time I've really seen Patti LuPone sing an I just laughed at how Forbidden Broadway portrays her singing style.. they're spot on. She's very good.. but does have a tendency to drop consonants and slur words. Grease really REALLY really needs to go into about a 20 year hibernation. The revivals have come so far from the original production that it's almost not the same show and that's sad. I loved the original script (having done the show) and the movie killed that script. But since the movie is SO famous the new revivals have to have that music in it. The guy from In The Heights who rapped his acceptance speech.. bleah. Loved that guy who accepted with a speech that made no sense at all. The best part was that they ended on time :)

The one where he said something about finally getting "real" theatre actors & not TV or movie actors acting onstage? What a slam to people like Megan Mullaly sitting right there in the audience.

I dont think it was so much a slam, but saying how great it was to bring the cast of August: Osage County from Chicago to Broadway, yay for Steppenwolf! And after writing A:OC Tracy Letts can say whatever the hell he wants as far as I am concerned, and all the true broadway performers wouldnt be sad to see the Hollywood types staying away, more jobs for them

Posts: 5760 (06/16/08 12:11 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Fran & Barry Weissler are the notoriously cheap and awful Broadway producers who always stunt cast their shows with Hollywood types, most famously with Chicago. Curtis is only coming back for the 2.5 weeks that Cheyenne will be out in July. Xanadu will definitely run through the Summer, if it makes it to mid-October is anyones guess at this point. Their grosses arent that great overall, such a shame.

When I first heard about it, I thought it would be thought of as a big joke and never last long enough for me to see it. I think it's turned out to be a pleasant surprise for many. And gotcha on the Weisslers. A lot of the long time musicals seem to go for the name. Especially on the touring companies. It's a draw for a lot of average theatre-goers.

But it has an absolutely HORRID book. As far as I am concerned the book is embarassingly bad, and it really ruins the end of the show. I dont ever remember a book that weak, and the sad thing is they had so much time between the off-broadway production and this production to fix that book and all they did was change some minor plot points.

WTF was that all about? The singing was horrid, the chemistry between the two was horrid, the set (or lack of set) was horrid & the costumes were horrid. Why did they have the female in period costume & the guy in jeans/sneakers? Sorry, but I wouldn't spend 5 bucks to go see that one much less $125.

I hated Lion King the musical). No you are NOT the only person who feels that way. I hated it- I kept thinking that they relied WAY too heavily on the movie. At one point didn't they even turn to the audience & joke about it? I was appalled. And during "Hakuna Matata" when Simba grows up- my daughter who has seen the movie but does not love it or have it memorized, totally did not "get" that Simba had grown since it wasn't all cartoonish & she couldn't "see" the transformation; little boy runs off stage, big man swings on stage. She was like "who's that?" I had to explain- "remember in the movie when Simba grows up during this song? That just happened." She was like... "ohhhhh...whatever." The costumes were amazing but the rest... meh. The biggest ripoff was the night we were going- they were raising money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS so for $20 you could get your picture taken with Simba after the show. My daughter desperately wanted to so I said okay... we pay our money, go over there & he's totally standing there in a bathrobe- unrecognizable to my 7-year old. She's like "who's that?" The implication when they said you could get your picture with him was that he'd be in costume. But no, no costume, no headdress, no nothing. Now I'm sure he was exhausted & tired, but all the kids standing there were like, "huh?" I have no idea what my daughter ever did with that picture but at least we contributed to a good cause. :) Anyway, last night was great- I'm going to NYC in a few weeks & I'm planning to see SPRING AWAKENINGS hoping to get tix to PASSING STRANGE & I have tix to AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY as well. I want to pick a few other shows as well. Should be a fun theater filled week for me. :)

Mandy Patinkin explained it before the clip, but that is exactly as it is in the show (except the set) The guy (George) goes back to Grand Jatte to show his chromolume on the island his great grandfather (George Seurat) painted his famous painting. The woman is his great grandmother coming back to tell him to move on, and speaks to him as if he is both George's at once. Its the emotional center of the show and one of the most powerful scenes in musical theatre history. But obviously to casual observers it doesnt make much sense out of the context of the show. They should have done "Its Hot Up Here" or "Sunday"

After the opening, I was expecting it to be awesome. What really killed it for me were two points: "Can't Wait To Be King" was hideous. One of my favorite songs from the movie and they totally killed it with the staging and the "animal costumes." They have all these beautiful "animals" on stage and the song, which is supposed to be done WITH the animals, is changed so that it's a "cartoon" of the animals. It looked awful.. and add to the fact that I hate most child actors.. it was a joke. The second point, which is more surreal in nature, really chapped my ass. At one point, Mufasa is singing to Simba. The actor takes off his head piece, sets it on the ground and WALKS AWAY FROM IT. Now, I am not one of those people who gets "lost in the show" and "taken away from reality" the moment the curtain rises, but what they just showed was a Lion REMOVING IT'S HEAD and leaving it on the ground. Way to totally break the "immersion" factor of the show. "Beauty and The Beast" was 100x better and should have lasted much longer than "Lion King."
