The Bond thread made me think of this...
Was it the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's or now?
Could Bruce Lee beat Jet Li?
Dirty Harry bust a cap in Bruce "Die Hard" Willis?
Indiana Jones whip it out on Jason Bourne?

The 80's. Rambo movies galore. Die Hard. And Arnold had something at the theater every other weekend.

The 1940s made the action hero. The 80s is derivative machismo without the style.

I actually saw this in a theater. I was young.

I disagree with Gregoire. The '40s made macho manly men, but they weren't really action heros.

The 40's did not make the action hero. An action movie requires lots of bad dialogue, barely any acting ability, and loads of special effects. They
didn't really exist much before the 70's and the ones that did are only watchable for laughs.

No, you've just changed the definition of 'action hero' to match the hordes of brainless muscle studs and car explosions that have taken their
place. Cowboys, gangsters, detectives, and military men were the action heroes of the 1940s. By the 80s they were cops and mercenaries.

Right. I am not lumping them all into the same category. I don't think of them as action movies. I think of them as westerns, crime dramas, and war movies, etc. |

I also agree with the 80's. Flashy enough to hold our attention, but with real pyrotechnics instead of CGI.

Gregoire wrote: Yeah, but in those old 40's flicks the extent of the action was two or three punches or a gunshot. I've always considered those films to be more dramatic than action. |
