What you do off the clock could cost you your job! We mentioned a few days ago that long time Andrew Lloyd Webber associate Simon Lee, who was also one the judges on the Canuck reality show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, was arrested on Sunday for assault and forced imprisonment. He pulled a Boy George and attempted to trap some dude in his HOtel room. Well, his shenanigans have cost him dearly. He's been fired as the musical supervisor of the upcoming Toronto-based Lloyd Webber production of The Sound of Music. The PR firm repping the production said, "Simon is a very talented person who is extremely important to us. However, on this occasion we felt it was necessary to seek the termination of his engagement on The Sound of Music in Toronto. The alleged events are subject to legal proceedings and, therefore, we can't comment further." There's no such thing as loyalty during a time of scandal! |

OH SNAP.
I meant to come in here the other day and post this article. It's too bad... he was becoming one of my favorite things about the show (at least until ALW turned up). Problem for Maria Judge A world-renowned conductor and judge on the CBC-TV reality show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? faces assault and forcible confinement charges following an apparent domestic dispute at a Yorkville hotel. Just hours after the show's final episode aired Monday night, Toronto Police released details yesterday of an incident that occurred early Sunday involving Simon Lee, 46, and another man at the Hazelton Hotel. The 24-year-old victim was allegedly seen scaling down the side of the upscale hotel, from one balcony to another, shortly after midnight by a passerby, who called police. "This is a domestic situation," said Det. Vanessa Ward adding the victim suffered injuries that were not considered serious.
"With respect to significant injuries, no, it was simple assault," she said.
DISPUTE OVERHEARD Ward said the incident occurred inside the hotel but the dispute was overheard by a witness who then watched as the victim went from the fourth floor balcony to the third. "The allegations are he was assaulted in the hotel room and he tried to flee the hotel room, but the accused obstructed (the victim's attempt to escape)," Const. Tony Vella said. Lee made a brief court appearance Monday and was released on $10,000 bail. He is to return to court on Aug. 27. The show ran on CBC over seven weeks as a unique way to choose an actress to play the role of the leading lady Maria in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new production of The Sound of Music, which opens this fall at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. HAND-PICKED Lee, who has worked with Webber on musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar, was hand-picked by the show's creator and producer to be one of the reality program's three judges along with vocal coach Elaine Overholt and British entertainer John Barrowman. However, the London-based conductor missed the last two episodes -- Sunday and Monday -- for what were initially reported as "personal reasons," including the finale in which Elicia MacKenzie, 23, of Surrey, B.C., was voted the winner by viewers. "We haven't been in direct contact with Simon, but we understand that he was charged in relation to an alleged domestic dispute," CBC spokesman Jeff Keay said. "Given that it's a private matter, and something that is before the courts, it would be inappropriate for us to comment on it any further." Keay pointed out that Webber appeared as a guest judge in the final weeks of the show. "(So) Simon's absence for the last two episodes didn't really have an affect on the ... outcome of the program."

I wonder if he and a regular young lover were having a tiff, as opposed to trapping a complete stranger in his room?

The runner-up on How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? has been cast as an "alternate Maria" for the upcoming Toronto stage production of
The Sound of Music.
Janna Polzin, 25, will play Maria twice a week, while the winner of the CBC-TV reality show, Elicia MacKenzie, will perform the role six times weekly, said producers Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Ian and David Mirvish. Webber said the role of Maria is a challenging one, noting that the nun-turned-governess is onstage in almost every scene of the musical. Polzin, a music theatre graduate from Woodstock, Ont., will perform Wednesday evenings and Saturday matinees. MacKenzie, 23, of Vancouver, will perform Tuesday evenings, Wednesday matinees, Thursday through Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees. "I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be part of this production," Polzin said in a news release. "This is the opportunity of a lifetime." The CBC show aimed to find a Maria to star in the stage production. A judging panel weighed in on contestants through the run of the program, but the final decision to cast MacKenzie rested with viewers. How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? was based on a British show of the same name. Connie Fisher was the winner of that program and went on to earn raves in the subsequent stage show. Webber has said Polzin most reminds him of Fisher. The Sound of Music opens Oct. 15 at the Princess of Wales Theatre. The Canadian Press |

Saw it yesterday and I just wanted to say the whole thing is enchanting. Amazing production values, especially notable are the killer opening and the
"hey, now we're all Nazis!" scene. You almost forget you're watching a stage show - it's that perty all around. If you like musical
theatre this is a must see. I think so highly of it I just had to share a couple of thoughts.

Kind of a weird show to do a reunion for. Did CBC ever follow up with a Grease version or some other show?

Don't think there was any kind of follow up show, but yeah it's an interesting reunion type show. But I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Was I the only one who watched? Why yes, Seaguy I think you were. How did you like it? Oh thank you for asking. I thought it was quite enjoyable and I wish more reality shows did something like this more often. Sweet, thanks Seaguy! |
