I'm not against old bands, just old bands that suck. Tom Petty is cool. So are Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger. I saw all of them in the 70s and would
probably see them now. Hell, I might even go see the Eagles. But Boston and Journey and Styx have always sucked.
Serious question: Do singers' voices wear out as they get old? I notice that all of these bands are missing their singers, so I'm wondering if that's the case. I remember reading an article about Boston back in the day. Apparently, they were very happy with the huge success of their first album and would have been fine being one (album) hit wonders and doing something else with their lives. But they had a 3 record deal, and the label (Epic?) wouldn't let them out of the deal, because they knew they could make a ton of money off the band. That's why Boston's other albums were so bad -- they really had no interest or desire to make them. And I've always liked Tom Scholz -- he was kind of a geeky guitar god. He has an EE degree fro MIT and designed all the cool guitar effects that he used on the Boston albums. I remember in the 80s, he started a company that designed and sold guitar effects. He designed the first headphone practice amp, called the 'Rockman'. It's a little box you could hang on your belt, plug in your guitar and listen on headphones. And it had built-in chorus, reverb and distortion. I bought one in 1982 and I still play with it sometimes. It doesn't seem like a big deal now, but back then it was pretty amazing. For that alone, he should be a legend.

Can I derail this thread a little and talk about what a fucking pervert Bruce Springsteen is?
Seriously. |

Mornin' OT.
Great question, Beefcake. There are many reasons (besides the "musical differences" cliche) why singers leave. 1. Yes, vocal chords get worse with age & use. 2. Many musicians get jealous of the frontman's popularity (David Lee Roth) 3. Some singers leave to join a bigger band (Paul Shortino in Quiet Riot) 4. DRUGS (Syd Barrett, Janis Joplin, possibly Jim Morrison) 5. Planes (Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, John Denver) 6. Hollywood (Gwen Stefani's husband, that dude from the Fine Young Cannibals) |

Hey SWM, always a pleasure to see you!
Ok no, seriously... "Hey little girl is your daddy home..." and now this whole "Girls in their summer clothes" shit? Yea. Umm I'm keeping my kid far away from this monster. |

Don't forget "Hey little girl, I wanna marry you". NOW went after him for that line in 1980.
So Springsteen likes the young stuff. Who doesn't? |

Never considered the Springsteen perversity. He threw that speedball right by me.

What exactly did you think he was doing while 'Dancing in the Dark'? Or why he was 'Born to Run'? Obviously, he always had to stay one step
ahead of the law.
And I'm not even gonna start with what he meant by the "Tunnel of Love". . . . |

Born in the U.S.A. just took a creepy turn. Thanks, GNG. |

He never did say how old Rosalita was; come to think of it.
I still can't believe he divorced his trophy wife for a back-up singer. I'd quote some lyrics but I've never been a fan... |

Did he go away and leave you all alone
I got a bad desire I'm on fire Tell me now baby is he good to you Can he do to you the things that I do I can take you higher I'm on fire And the girls in their summer clothes In the cool of the evening light The girls in their summer clothes Pass me by (the video is a paedo dream) We'll ride down baby into this tunnel of love. Well I can feel the soft silk of your blouse And them soft thrills in our little fun house. Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us: Yeah you and me and all that stuff we're so scared of Gotta ride down baby into this tunnel of love. |

Happy Tom Petty Day, GNG, you lucky biznatch.
Anyway, re Bruce Springsteen: He's a dude from Jersey. Whaddaya want? And I've always liked Tom Scholz -- he was kind of a geeky guitar god. He has an EE degree fro MIT and designed all the cool guitar effects that he used on the Boston albums.Exactly. The guy is a genius who had a hobby that turned him into a freaking rock star. How can you not love that? |

Ummmm, okay. Those lyrics all use sexual imagery, but why does that make Bruce a paedo?
Is this one of those feminist rants about how "girl" means a woman under the age of 16? |

Hey-Bruce gave Courtney Cox her big break, didn't he? We should all be thankful and not take his name in vain. Or something.
