Do you think people should have the right to sell their organs if they... |

Say your kidney or a slice of liver for a little extra spending money?
Why or why not? |

I think that there is the possibility of a "slippery slope" in that it could become a situation where very few people are willing to do it without
money involved. Or the organ would go to the highest bidder and someone waiting longer would lose out because they didn't have the money.

and ther are people dumb enough to sell their organs who don't fully understand the long term consequences

unfortunately there are people who could talk to a doctor and still not understand the long term consequences

Then there's the whole concept of creating a market for organs, which will lead to a black market for organs. But why worry about that, right?

The selling of one's organs is inviable socially and humanely because:
1. No one will donate organs for free anymore. Only rich people will be able to save themselves. One study even showed (I'm not sure how) that when given the idea of a country where one can sell their organs, people would even be more unlikely to agree to organ donation after death. 2. Destitute people may make poor choices and sell their organs when tight for cash. 3. Poor people and minorities may be coerced into selling organs. Foreigners may be shipped in to create an organ trade. One can imagine the horrors of promising rewards to citizens of third world countries. We'd be an organ harvesting country. |

Private organ sales are already fact in second-world countries. There have been several (I hesitate to say many, because I don't have any stats) cases of
people flying to India, for example, to have transplant surgeries from people willing to donate an organ for cash. I watched a documentary about a man from
Canada who had his transplant done in India because that's where he could have it done most quickly instead of waiting in the transplant queue.

stupidity of the public and the slippery slope arguments cannot be used to deny smarter people of their rights.
so yes, they should be allowed. people sell their bodies right now anyways (labor-intensive jobs, sex workers etc), so no biggie. |
