Not a fad in may family as both my father and his brother has last names as their second names and my mother had last names as first and second names and they were born in 1919 and 1921. It's a tradition in some families and a way of honoring their ancestors. What was even worse, was the family habit on both sides, of always using a name that was already a family name - I was given my grandmother's first name and she had her mother's first name.

That may be the case in 1% of the kids' names, but is is most definitely a fad that has just gotten bigger and biggr in the past 10 years or so.
