Remove this ad I'm headed to Houston for a conference this fall. Any recommendations to where should I stay Downtown (walking distance to convention center)? And what else is there to do there? I got 1 day to play, 1 day to make presentations, and 1 day to hang out at the conference. Any good barbecue joints there? I'm on a mission from God to find the best barbecue evah.

Menu Don't miss the jalepeno cheese bread, and the pecan pie, either. Take home some bull sacks for souveniers. If you need a hotel downtown in walking distance, I'd pick the Four Seasons. Historical sites -- getting warmer. Anything more creative than Four Seasons. Any knowledge of Hotel Icon?

I'm not familiar with Hotel Icon, but then I don't live in Houston anymore. It looks like a bit of a walk to the Convention Center, though. If you are carrying presentation materials, then you could cab it. I just remembered that I also like The Lancaster...particularly for romance.. but that's a hike, too. Check it out. I highly recommend the Museum of Fine Arts and The Menil Collection specifically. The Contemporary Art Museum, not so much. You can get a great lunch at the MFA at the Cafe Express inside the museum. The oldest building in Houston is a bar downtown called La Carafe...good times and many memories for many people. If you go, play "Crazy" for me..Patsy Cline.

But then they modernized the square, it'd be hard to find now. I'm scared of the light rail and won't go to Houston at all, I live north of there. I do remember a pretty good Zoo.

Remove this ad no boutique hotels near the convention center - it was built in a part of downtown that originally had nothing but warehouses and homeless people. I'll get back with ya after I check with some folks at work are you gonna have a car, or are you gonna hoof it and stay mainly downtown?

Posts: 19636 (07/15/08 06:05 AM) MESS member Reply Quote More Recent Posts	pfft to merkyl Houston Downtown sounds like there are some boutique hotels there - check out under business hotels and there's a link to more info on the hotels including links to their sites and a dining link with several BBQ restaurants listed Hotel Icon has a pretty good reputation, or at least the restaurant does and that link should give you an idea of what festivals/events are going on when your visit is planned

Personally, I wouldn't want to spend the day there (again), but everyone who comes into town wants to go - it's pretty significant historically and they have some neat stuff there. Of course, I don't know if they still let you go to the actual training facilities and stuff, but I think that they do. Other historical sites - San Jacinto Monument and the Battleship Texas. They're on the same site, so you can do both.
