It's no longer a matter of how badly will NBC fuck it up, which they will, but how NBC can get through the month without causing an exchange of nuke-tipped ICBM's. If New York, L.A., Beijing and Shanghai are still standing after the closing ceremonies, I'll be happily surprised. Showing actual competitions rather than extended clips on the athlete with the latest dead parent/sibling/parakeet might help. Most athletes are incredibly boring and selfish- that's why they're athletes. Little else in life really interests them. So, yeah, I could care less about some athlete's mother or dead brother or twin girls at home. It used to be interesting watching them juggle day jobs with training, but now all of them are supported by the USOC, and some of them are millionaires through sponsorships. They lead easy lives, for the most part. So get those cameras on the field and lets have long languid shots of the athletes as they stretch out and try to ignore their competition and try to quell the butterflies on the upcoming race of their life. That's still pretty cool.

Who cares if I don't know French, at least I won't be subjected to those idiots at NBC Sports and their cloying sob stories. Plus I might see something live on occasion and maybe even some events Americans aren't involved in.

The wee hours of the morning are good for that too. I loved it during the winter olympics, curling was always on right when I got home from work.

Curling FTW! By the way, isn't the Olympics of all sporting events ever the one thing where you shouldn't need to kill time with shmaltzy crap? This is the event where there is probably a sport happening 24/7 and maybe more than one at once, just give me non stop sports! God ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN Classic for a world record event say/ if they could get control of these games would put NBC to shame it would be the ownage of the century. 24 hour sports with occasional breaks for Baseball! Woohoo!

I'm interested because I'm going to China but not until the Olympics are over, in October. I'll be in Shanghai and Beijing, with a visit to the Great Wall that I'm uber excited about.

Respiratory concerns have also been a factor in the decision of some athletes not to march in the opening ceremony, although distraction from pre-games preparation is cited as the main reason. Air pollution has been a problem at most recent summer Olympics and Dr Peter Baquie believes China will turn things around. "Air quality in China is going to be a moving target. The contruction is going to be stopped, industry," he said. "I don't think I am being naive. I would anticipate there would be improvement to a currently improved situation." The head of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) asthma group, Ken Fitch, is also confident that China's skies will improve. Professor Fitch was the team doctor at the 1984 Los Angeles so he has seen it all before. Athletes have just started sending him applications to use asthma medications which are restricted at elite sporting events. "Athletes who wish to take either the beta-toagonist which is ventolin and the corticosteriods need to apply to the IOC Medical Commission," he said. "This an online application form which is reviewed by my panel of six and we advise them whether they have passed the criteria .. necessary to approve them."

I got dizzy walking down the street due to the exhaust fumes. Beijing was much more tolerable. I hardly noticed the pollution there.

Can't wait for the swimmers and divers. I try to watch as much of it as possible. I love watching every single competition that is on. Please share any stations that you find that are good, thanks. I'm reading a book about China now and the smog sounds horrific. This is a lot of great video on youtube of it, and it looks worse than Mexico City, which is #1 I think, I read a list somewhere of the worse polluted cities. I do agree that it would be nice to see more of the competition, even if they aren't American. I want to watch all the gymnastics routines, not just the ones from the US and the medalists. Is there any chance we will really see events live or is the time difference just too big?

I love a good showmance. I see that brewing as well. I like a good rivalry, but I really want it to be one-sided and Michael can attain his dream of winning 8 gold medals. Of course he's glad that Thorpe and Hooganband have passed on, so it makes it easier. Off of swimming but still on the Olympics ... I still hold to my beliefs that adding Beach Volleyball as an Olympic sport was the stupidest idea on Earth.
