Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to have the Olympics in fucking China? I hope they're fired.

Probably the Chinese...
Still, as pissy as I am about the way the ChiComs are handling the situation, I don't deny that China's got a legit claim to hosting. I just hope their heavyhandedness exposes them as the the commie bastards that they are, and China gets some real reform. And although I doubt it, these could turn out to be very impressive games. |

I'm not exactly sure how the Olympics will do in Beijing. It could either go really good or it could just go bad. I agree with the person that said they
shouldn't have even picked them to host the Olympics if there was going to be this much controversy about it.
On the positive side I am loving all the new buildings that are being built in Beijing. Every single one of them look very innovative and architecturally unique. I like the 'bird's nest' the best:

^ I agree. While the Games have met criticism since they're being held in Beijing, keep in mind that they got the majority in the second round over
Toronto, Paris, and Istanbul. I'm excited to see if China can pull the Olympics off.

I don't get why the US constantly kowtow to the Chinese. I'm glad I read this thread....I noticed a new channel on my tv lineup called Beijing Olympics 2008, it's been showing clips from past games, now I
realize it's one of those exclusive channels you guys are talking about, yay....many of the sports I like to watch usually aren't covered by the major
(US) networks, so I was not happy finding out that the extra video footage NBC will feature on their site will not work on Macs unless you have the latest OS,
the Leopard.

I'm still * reeeeeling * from the fact that David Sender is not on the gymnastics team!! I mean, a sprained ankle can heal in, what, a week or
two?? Plenty of time for the Olympics. Granted he's no Paul Hamm the Great, but not having the current fucking NATIONAL champion on the team, not even as
an alternate, is pretty inconsiderate. Poor dude, I sure he feels about 3 feet tall (a foot off of his current height). They must really not like him, even
favoring one-event wonder Kevin Tan on the team instead. This whole idea of "putting the best team together" (instead of giving a shit about the
athletes themselves or them working their asses off to pursue an Olympic dream) will blow up in their faces!

Soo....they should put someone on the team just because they "work their asses off to pursue an Olympic dream", even if there are 300 better people?
Last I checked they don't hand out medals for working hard, just for being fastest/strongest/best.

My understanding is that particularly with the gymnastis teams, they'll put an injured athlete on the team in case he/she improves, but let the alternates
know there's a good chance of being called up. I don't too much about gymnastics, though. I do know with track, they'll take an injured runner
onto the team in hopes of enough of a recovery to at least squeeze him/her onto on of the relay line-ups. That's what happened with Michael Johnson in
'92 I think.
On Deng -- I was wrong. He was alive in '96, but Jiang had become Chairman in '92. I guess I thought Deng had served until his death. Anyhow, there's no mention anywhere of Jiang being in Atlanta, but this was the Clintons. I'm not sure even Bill attended the opening, so it probably wasn't such a big deal back then. Still, the Chinese are overpoliticizing these games far too much. Could you imagine the backlash if the US behaved like this? That's probably why the Atlanta games didn't have all the foreign dignitaries floating around. |

There was a news story about one of the swimmers tested positive and taken off the team...the report said that since the team roster was sent in on Tuesday
that they cannot put in any replacement. Wonder if the same set of rules apply to all the different teams.

That swimmer was American Jessica Hardy.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jessica Hardy's first trip to the Olympics could be over before it began. The swimmer tested positive for a banned substance, leaving her just two weeks to pursue any appeals before the Beijing Games begin.Hardy's "A" sample from the recent U.S. Olympic trials tested positive, a person familiar with the test results told The Associated Press on Wednesday night. The person, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said the banned substance was a stimulant but did not provide any other details.USA Swimming spokeswoman Jamie Olson declined to comment from the team's training camp at Palo Alto, Calif., where Hardy left to return to her family's home in Southern California, the swimmer's agent said.Agent Evan Morgenstein told the AP that during a brief phone conversation with Hardy, she told him, "I never did anything wrong. I never cheated."Morgenstein said he heard there were conflicting results from Hardy's tests, though he didn't have any details. "I'm very, very concerned about the confusion of her test coming up positive-negative-positive," Morgenstein said. "She's the one person I would never believe would do anything - anything - to cheat. Ever."Swimming World magazine's Web site first reported the positive doping test. The Web site nbcolympics.com reported Hardy's backup "B" sample also tested positive. If she chooses, the 21-year-old swimmer can pursue appeals with both the American Arbitration Association and the Court of Arbitration for Sport. With just two weeks to spare, Hardy could appeal directly to CAS, whose ruling would be final and binding.Typically, a first-time doping offense results in a 2-year ban.Hardy earned spots on her first Olympic team in her best event, the 100-meter breaststroke, and the 50 freestyle and 400 free relay."I don't think if you had told me a month ago that I would make it in all three of these events that I would have believed you," she said at the trials. "I'm expecting good things for sure." In Beijing, Hardy was expected to be a medal threat in the 100 breast, and to play an important part on the 400 free relay, and possibly the 400 medley
relay.Mark Schubert, head coach and general manager of the U.S. team, and Dave Salo, Hardy's personal coach at Southern California, did not return phone
messages left by the AP.The U.S. squad departs Friday for a pre-Olympic training camp in Singapore.Hardy's name was among the 596 athletes officially
entered into the Beijing Games on Wednesday by the U.S. Olympic Committee. If Hardy appeals and loses, the U.S. could not add to its swimming roster because
the deadline to do so was July 21.That might leave 41-year-old Dara Torres in the 50 free and Megan Jendrick in the 100 breast as the sole American entrants in
those events. It was not immediately clear if the U.S. could move a second swimmer already on the team into those events.Hardy burst onto the international
scene at the 2005 world championships in Montreal, where she broke the world record in the 100 breast. Her time of 1 minute, 6.20 seconds still stands as the
American record. She swam at California for two seasons, winning the 100 breast at the 2006 and 2007 NCAA championships before turning pro.

cindidindi76 wrote: Excuse me, but I mentioned that in the last couple of sentences in my paragraph. My emphasis was on the fact that he's the current national champion and only had a sprained ankle which can heel quickly. I KNOW they don't give a shit about someone's dream. Anyway, I think the alternates (Bavsar, Artemev, Durante) are stronger than the chosen ones. But the "chosen ones" have put up such high scores on certain individual events, they decided to name them directly. So, Kevin Tan can post a ring score that is world class, maybe even medal in that event, but his other events are sub-par (except maybe the high-bar). Sender has scored higher than him in 4 other events. But since Sender may not score something as high as 15.8 on any event, he's not a good fit for the team. I'll bet that, at the end of the team competition, a few of the chosen will not post a higher overall score than David Sender did at Nationals!! And, if any of these chosen ones for their chosen specialty even medals in that event, it would be a stretch. Know that. |

You can certainly make a case for the use of Olympic standards.
No matter what country you are from, if you meet the qualifying standards in any Olympic event (must be in a sanctioned event, of course), then you are automatically in. Also, of course, the countries could send people to compete who have lower qualifications- but that's OK. The preliminaries would have to be more numerous, maybe another couple levels, but the result is that the best athletes would truly be in the finals. There might be a logistical and money problem- the additional athletes might have to pay their way to the games outside of their countries Olympic team, but I'm sure they would find a way to get there! The USA might have dozens of competitors in the 100 meter dash, but so what? Subjective sports like gymnastics or figure skating would not benefit from this, of course. |

That sucks for Iraq. Their soccer team did really well last time, bronze medal.
Does anyone know what happened to the Afghanistan girl? She ended up running away because all the extremist men didn't like that she was going to the olympics. |
