No decision yet on Morgan Hamm

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- The International Gymnastics Federation made no decision Saturday on the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's punishment concerning gymnast Morgan Hamm.

USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny said he expected an announcement on Monday.

USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee had already said that the warning would not affect Hamm's spot on the team for the Beijing Games.

USADA announced July 3 that Hamm had been warned for a May 24 positive test for glucocorticosteroid, a cortisone-like anti-inflammatory. The drug is allowed if an athlete gets a therapeutic use exemption, but Hamm had failed to do that.

Hamm said he got the shot May 2 from his doctor after taping, ultrasound and other therapies failed to reduce the pain and swelling in his left ankle. After being notified of the positive test, which occurred the second day of the national championships, he sent USADA his medical records and letters from his doctor and physical therapist. USADA said it had "absolutely no concern" the shot was for anything but medicinal purposes.

As part of his punishment, Hamm's results from the second day of nationals were wiped out. But USAG and the USOC reviewed all of the results from nationals and the Olympic trials, and said Hamm would still have made the team.

Because international federations have the right to appeal USADA decisions to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, however, the FIG's disciplinary commission had to follow protocol and review the case.

USADA and USA Gymnastics sent representatives to the commission's regularly scheduled meeting at FIG headquarters in case there were any questions. Hamm did not attend, though he did give the commission a statement explaining what happened.

Bhavsar gets Hamm's spot on Olympic team

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)-Raj Bhavsar is finally on his way to the Olympics, thanks to Paul Hamm.

Bhavsar was chosen to replace Hamm, who withdrew from the Beijing Games earlier Monday after deciding he would not be healthy enough to compete. The reigning Olympic champion broke his hand 2 months ago, and now has a strained rotator cuff that prevents him from doing still rings and some skills on other events.

The 27-year-old Bhavsar was an alternate in 2004.

The disappointment nearly drove him out of the sport, but he returned with new dedication and attitude. He finished second on parallel bars and third in the all-around, rings and vault in the weighted and combined rankings from four days of competition at the national championships and Olympic trials.

"This is a tremendous honor and the first feeling that comes to mind is that dreams can come true," said Bhavsar, part of the silver medal world championship teams in 2001 and 2003. "Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of a great athlete, Paul Hamm. My heart goes out to him. He did an admirable thing, and he will always be a hero in my eyes."
