Monday, December 1, 2008: Official Screen Credits forms due Friday, December 26, 2008: Nominations ballots mailed Monday, January 12, 2009: Nominations polls close 5 p.m. PT Thursday, January 22, 2009: Nominations announced 5:30 a.m. PT, Samuel Goldwyn Theater Wednesday, January 28, 2009: Final ballots mailed Monday, February 2, 2009: Nominees Luncheon Saturday, February 7, 2009: Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards presentation Tuesday, February 17, 2009: Final polls close 5 p.m. PT Sunday, February 22, 2009: 81st Annual Academy Awards presentation bla , bla, bla... so apparently all you have to do to get best actor this year is to put in a mediocre performance as some cartoon villain, off yourself in the manor of heath ledger, and you are a lock. bully. let the games begin... I watched the Dark Knight a few weeks ago and I think Ledger will get nominated for supporting. He's pretty awesome in this movie - scary and deranged. It reminded me of Hannibal Lecter at times, among other legendary villains. Sometimes it's over the top but most of the time, I kept waiting for him to come back on screen. Plus it will bring ratings up for the awards show because a) guaranteed blockbuster movie (so a movie people actually watched) and b) popular dead actor nominated (and may even win). So people may care who wins for once in the past few years. But if he gets nominated, I wouldn't mind if Downey Jr. was also nominated for Iron Man.

Remove this ad Bank on it as a lock for best actor and possibly best film (this year's indie slot if nothing else shows up). Its the only film outside of Batman getting any sort of 'Oscar buzz'

I doubt it will get noticed by the Academy, but I was pleasantly suprised when Marion Cotillard won last year so maybe. It was good. Very well-acted and heartfelt.

I think at this time last year people were all over Rendition and Reservation Road. The only thing that is at least an 80% lock is Angelina Jolie for Changeling. It's an Eastwood movie that received rave reviews. The academy hardly ever ignores his movies or his actors.
