No mention of Nicole Kidman and her feathery, breastless dress?

If you had a son -- of any age -- would you let any of those cougars near him? I don't have any kids and that was still the first thing to come to mind.

Keith Urban must not be a breast man, and that dress was ghastly Nicole has on. A lot of them when they wear light colored gowns it looks blah, and the
strapless things if they're too big chested, a la Aretha Franklin, or too small chested (a la Gwenth Paltrow when she won her Oscar tho it wasn't
strapless but it emphasized her flat chest at that time), a strapless gown is a big bad choice. Great to see those pics last page here to look at the dresses.
It's wonderful to see them all dressed up like that, love that show.
I thought that was great having prior actors and actresses introduce the nominees, they should definitely leave that in each year. The short films, even the documentaries, most people don't get to even see them anywhere so that's a very boring segment. It would be meaningful if they made it a point in the months before to put them somewhere the audience could see them. I think IFC shows the shorts, but I'm not sure, tho I have never even wanted to watch it. Even the foreign language films nominated were not shown anywhere that most people can go to. Wasn't this one of the worse? It looks like the waiter from the Oscar afterparty was storing his towel on the front of her.

I finally watched Happy Go Lucky. I need someone to explain to me why that so great. It had no plot. She was not particularly interesting, just an average
person. I really don't get it. What a waste of time. Glad I waited for the DVD and surprised I made it to the end. Did I miss something?

I recently saw it as well. And while I enjoyed it, I didn't really get it either. If anything, isn't it a cautionary tale that warns about being
happy? :P

The thing about Happy-Go-Lucky is that it's not a particularly plotted film, but more of a character study of this woman's happiness and how that
affects the other people around her. Many people I know who saw this film absolutely hated it because they couldn't stand Poppy and said if they knew
someone like her they would punch her. For someone to be that cheerful about practically everything, it seems to be more of a conscious decision than a
personality quirk. I guess I find the rare "eternal optimist" rather admirable, but I also thought Hawkins' performance was spectacular and she
created one of the most "lived in" characters of last year. I don't think there's any warning against 'being happy', but it does show
how your attitude can in turn change another person's attitude, though it all depends on them (the driving instructor, played by Eddie Marsan, was also
criminally ignored around awards season) I guess there's not too much to 'get' about it, but I found it fascinating and it kept a smile on my face
the entire time, so that why it's one of my favorite films of '08.

Congrats Batman/Pixar fans. You guys bitched so much that they were "snubbed," that the Best Picture category will now have TEN (no, not six or
seven), nominees beginning next year.

TEN?
That's ridiculous. |

I really don't know what to say. I am so disgusted with this news, I can't even think.
For some of us pathetic losers, the Oscars are like the highlight of our whole year. It is already shit with the stuido pushes letting undeserving films like "The Reader" be nominated, but now to water down the field with 10????? Now you are going to see the pushes for the "horror slot", "comedy slot", "grown-up comedy slot", "animated slot", "foreign film slot", "action film slot" etc etcfuckingbullshitetc....All it does is make the whole thing even more bullshit. And HOW are they going to do the introductions for all these things???? it worked in the 1930's because those films were GOOD. Now I will be forced to see things like "The Hangover" and "Star Trek" nominated each year. Wow......seriously, just wow......biggest movie news in 50 years. |

I like the idea of ten. But the show will be Hell to watch with all the clips.
Just saw your post about Happy Go Lucky, Carboys. I personally thought it was amazingly acted (adored Poppy's roommate); and I loved how at the beginning I was hating the character, then grew to admire her. As tasty said, I think it is about the conscious decision to be happy, being unflappable. And it is SO nice to finally see a movie in this day and age that does not have to be cynical or snarky. Oops. Forgot where I was for a second. |

I'm moreso pissed they're going back to because of the Pixar/TDK fanboys who cried about it and sent in death threats. If any Pixar film deserved a
nomination, it was "Finding Nemo," or the first "Toy Story." "Wall-E" and "Up" are complete jokes.

The Hangover was very, very funny. Y'all are kidding about it getting nominated though, right? I laughed my ass off, but no...not a Best Picture.
