Hugh Jackman as host is the best news ever! I, for one, am sick of the comedian hosts. This is supposed to be a ritzy affair, and they always dumb it down.
It irks me. I want glamour, class and general snootiness. Fuck middle America.

Carboys, I totally agree.. I'm also sick of the comics. I would like to see a classier production and I 'HOPE' my avi boy can pull it off.

I didn't think the film was simplistic at all. I learned a lot that I didn't know already. I never got around to watching the documentary. I thought
Penn was fantastic in this.

To be honest.. I haven't watched this new Sean Penn movie, and not sure if I will...
I just hate the guy for various reasons... among them, I think he's highly overated as an actor... he overacts often in movies and I find myself cringing or rolling my eyes at him sometimes The number one reason I can't stand him (besides his insane left-wing wacko politics of hate) is the fact that Bill Murray got ROBBED 5 yrs ago when the stupid academy gave best actor award to Penn for his ridiculously over the top performance in Mystic River... Murray was 1,000x better in Lost In Translation and he got overlooked because the voters felt Sean Penn was "due" ... fuck that, he didn't deserve shit, he even got nominated for the wrong film, he was much better (or less crappy) in 21 grams. Anyway... I read and also heard on MSNBC's Morning Joe that the SAG members could go on strick before the Oscars, so there's a chance that the award show might not happen at all....

I just saw this thread today, and I thought, "Wow, what perfect timing!" Then I read it was started in July? ... Huh?

I never was much of a fan of Sean Penn until I saw the movie "Dead Man Walking". How Nicholas Cage beat him for the Oscar that year still makes me
scratch my head. After seeing that movie I had a new found respect for him. I haven't seen Sean Penn in a lot of movies, and I didn't see "Mystic
River", but as with many awards they give it to someone because they are "due" and didn't give it to them when they deserved to win. But I
did really like him in "Milk" and thought he did a great job.

Sean Penn did a great job in both Mystic River AND in Milk. Regardless of anyone else's performance, he was brilliant and he earned & deserved his
Oscar.
That said, I think his performance in Milk is even better. It's one of those performances where you forget that it's an actor and you believe that it is the real character, or in this case the real person. I can't say the same for Bill Murray in Lost in Translation, which I loved by the way. But in that whole movie he was Bill Murray...not much of a stretch. |

I loved Sean Penn in Dead Man Walking and Mystic River. Also loved Into the Wild which he directed. Liked him in Carlito's Way and Fast Times plus others.
Haven't seen Milk, but have read a book about Harvey Milk. |

One other thing: Tom Cruise getting a Best Supporting GG nomination is just about the funniest thing ever.Because of the movie he's nominated for? Or because it's Tom Cruise? Because he's won two three Golden Globes already. (I try to forget Born on the 4th of July) |

seaguy wrote:Totally agree. I think this was a far stretch for Penn and he aced it. Deserves all the accolades and praise that come his way. I saw Slumdog Millionaire and loved it! No-name actors for me, which is refreshing. Reviews for Revolutionary Road came out in our city today and 'the critics' all raved about Kate Winslet's performance , taking what could have been an ordinary piece to new levels. But, I'm not surprised. |

Not getting the Milk hate whatsoever, anyone that tries to criticize it as a simplistic biopic is fucking idiotic, end of story. The film was beautifully
told, amazingly directed and the acting was superb from top to bottom (no pun intended.)
The movie that I do think is overrated is Slumdog Millionaire. I found myself being intermittently involved in the story and characters; sure, the direction was good and the look of the film was gorgeous - but I found myself bored to t.ears and slightly annoyed by the storytelling (flashing back to a moment in his past for each question). Rachel Getting Married, I personally loved. I really don't see TDK or Wall-E getting Best Pic noms. Liked Doubt but was hoping for something stronger. Revolutionary Road was fucking intense; you basically have to sit through 2 hours of people being utterly miserable. Mendes' direction is good if not predictable and as much as I love Thomas Newman's compositions, it's all very much of the same. Amazing acting by DiCaprio (who I've always thought was grossly overrated) and of course Winslet. Overall a good movie I'd recommend but not something I could see myself sit through a second time.

I don't get the "Wall-E for Best Picture" bullshit.
There is a difference between a well-made movie and a highly entertaining movie. |
