As amazing as Winslet is in RR, the Best Actress race seems to be as wide open as ever. Streep is losing steam, Winslet could be negatively affected by the
middling reviews 'Road' is destined to receive after its repeated snubs in all the early critics prizes while Hawkins from Happy-Go-Lucky has seemingly
started this mini-sweep.
Winslet is great in The Reader, too, though - overall that film is just OK. The most accurate review I've read of it was from EW; it's all very "fine" but never breaks out to really compel the viewer. |

Best Picture Drama Best Picture Comedy/Musical Best Foreign Language Film Best Animated Film You can't be nominated in two of these categories. That means that you can't be a drama and a comedy, you can't be a foreign language film and qualify against the English-speaking films, and you can't even be a foreign language animated film (see Persepolis last year only getting one nomination at the Globes). So ever since 2006 when the award was implemented, Wall-E, Ratatouille, and Cars have been ineligible for the Comedy/Musical category. The Oscars allow anything other than a short film to be nominated for Best Picture. It can be a foreign language film, a documentary, and yes, even an animated film. The category for animated films was so that even if they are not Best Picture material, they can still get the recognition they deserve. Not because they wanted to hinder its chances for Best Picture. And this is coming from somebody who doesn't want Wall-E nominated because it's the most overrated movie of the decade behind the one with gay cowboys and the trilogy where they walk for 3 hours. Just don't make excuses as to why it can't be nominated, because it does have a decent shot. |

Because if it has a shot of getting a best picture nomination, then it would be a shoe-in to win that Golden Globe. Toy Story 2, and The Lion King won that globe and were not nominated for BEst picture. Its not like the voters were like "oh we will just give them this award because there is no animated category". So if winner of a Best picture Globe didn't go on to be nominated for the Oscar i dont think Walle will either, even if it is just nominated for Best Animated and cant be nominated for BMOC. The fact if Wall-e is no where near the greatness of Beauty and the Beast, and is the reason it should not be nominated for Best Picture. ANd i feel the Animated category was put in place to give animated films a shot at Oscars [aside from the Music Category], its not that they cant be nominated in both, but that they wont nominate them in both because it already has a category. Just having an animated category already hurts Walle's chances, if Toy Story 2, and the Lion King couldn't get the nod, neither is Walle.

I think this is Kate's year. When she gets the double nods (it WILL happen) the Academy might finally get it in their heads how overdue she is. She's
obviously well-respected by the acting branch with 10 SAG noms since 1995.

Just saw Doubt, and theres no way in hell that it should be nominated for Best Picture. It was a middling movie with great performances, and the performances
are all that should be recognized.
Watching Doubt was like watching a play. I'm not saying thats a good or bad thing, it just doesn't deserve a Best Picture nod. |

Amen. Although The Dark Knight is probably a little more overrated. I hope they both get snubbed brutally. Hating on critical and popular darlings like TDK and Wall-E doesn't make you any more elitist, sry2say. |

Why is it that anyone who doesn't like mainstream crap like Wall-E gets called an elitist? Can one appreciate films that are not mainstream hits without being called a snob? The elitist accusation is so over-used these days. |

I didn't know disliking TDK or Wall-E made me a pretentious film snob. Sorry, I found the editing in TDK incredibly rushed, the dialogue corny, and the
cinematography cliche as hell.

MILK - BEST PICTURE OF 2008!
BUT IT WILL NOT WIN THE OSCAR, DUE TO HOMOPHOBICUNTS IN HOLLYWOOD! BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN WAS THE PROOF! |

She will be the one that will get the buzz at the right time in February and it will push her over the top. My personal opinion????? "RR" is a very good movie, but I can't say hers in the best performance in the likely 5. It felt a little forced to me. Best Performance of the Year??????? - Hands Down, no question......Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler". I also believe it is the Best Film of the Year, and his performance is astonishing..... |

Crash was better than Brokeback Mountain.I hated Crash - it was way too preachy and I found it boring from start to finish and much preferred the 1996 David Cronenberg film of the same name. Brokeback Mountain should have won the Best Picture Oscar that year. Milk was awesome and Sean Penn definitely deserves a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in that film. |

Crash was a shitty movie that has spawned an even shittier TV series that no one is watching. Why do they keep trying to inflict this crap on the viewing
audience?

I never understood the appeal of Crash. It was so stupid. All these melodramatic stories connected in a way that was total bullshit. I was rolling my eyes all the way through it, and then when it got nominated I was like "Whuuuuuut?" and then when it won I was nothing short of disgusted. |
