Has HBO ever had a show for one season or canceled it half way through? That's one of the "benefits" of HBO. They don't have to drop a series if it under performs and they believe in it. But series have gotten canceled, but I don't believe any have not had their full season run. |

I never read the books, so I am coming into this fresh and without anything to go by. (Usually books are much better than any screen adaptation, so I am
giving the benefit of the doubt.)
I'm going to give it a couple more weeks before I decide one way or another to continue with it. Anna Paquin as Sookie is my fave part of this so far. I am enjoying her character and her acting. My major complaint is Vampire Bill is just meh to me. I like my vampires hot & sexy and I don't find him at all attractive right now. Maybe as his character develops, he will become more appealing. I just don't know. Sookie's brother is hot, but depraved. Until the end of the ep I was sure he killed the whore, but now I am not so sure. Bartender guy is good looking, but too pathetic right now to get behind. Gay cook was hilarious, especially when he was messing with the fat redneck at the bar. "You can be my santa claus." I like Tara, but agree it is a bit too much. She needs to reel it back just a bit. Overacting, indeed. Sookie's Aunt is interesting and I like her. I was waiting for her to say that she met Vamp Bill when she was a young gal. I hope it gets better. I like the premise of vampires trying to mainstream themselves in society now that there is a synthetic blood they can consume. However, I just find nothing appealing watching a bunch of greasy rednecks & white trash running around. Also, the many, many voices Sookie was listening to was distracting. I had to turn on my subtitles and pause, because I didn't want to miss anything and there were just too many going on. |

Was the special they aired before True Blood last night about vampires in literature and pop culture? I watched a featurette on our cable's On Demand feature, and I don't wanna miss anything. |

I remember I didn't like Six Feet Under at first, so i'm giving this one a couple of weeks to develop. (atleast til Dex starts)

Definitely an uneven pilot, but I've seen much worse (JOHN FROM CINCINNATI, TELL ME YOU LOVE ME). This didn't pull me in like SFU, but the premise
is intriguing. I have some hope for this series. BIG LOVE didn't thrill me much in season 1, but became must-watch in season 2.

I also liked the vampire sex scene, it was creepy.
And the opening song is bad ass. |

I've let it soak in and now I think I'm very intregued by this. I'm in the minority, but I've always loved Anna Paquin and think she's the
best part about the show so far. I'm interested to see where they go with her powers. I think her Cajun accent's very good actually, especially for a
Canadian.
I think the first episode was meant to set up the whole show's philosophy -- which is actually very involved -- so I'm not too upset that the story kind of dragged. Yes, the parallels between vampires and homosexuals (or whatever fill in the blank oppressed minority) are a little obvious, but overall they work. The only thing I can't acclimate to is the fact that vampires are scary with mystical powers yet are obviously persecuted. How did the rednecks pin down the vampire to drain his blood in the first place? How do you so easily overtake a vamp? The black girl needs to be turned down about ten notches, as does the queeny cook. Lois Smith as the aunt blesses every project she works on. (The application that a friendly vampire can be used as a document of history is totally new to me and I look forward in seeing what they do here.) Sookie's brother is totally hot, as is Sam Trammell the bartender. |

I've read all the books and all the characters are pretty true so far for me except for Tara. I don't remember her being do damned bitchy. And she
didn't work at the bar.
But all in all, I think all pilots are a little bumpy. If they iron it out, they've really got something here. Anna is perfect. Sookie is odd and hates rude talk. Love her. Bill is kinda ordinary guy turned vampire in the books, so his meh-ness doesn't bother me. He grows on you. Eric had better be hot. He's the hottest in the books. I hope they do a good job with the shapeshifters when they start coming into play. I would definitely recommend anyone picking up the first book to read. "Dead Until Dark" is the title. It's well worth it and Charlaine Harris has been one of my favorite authors for years, so I'm very happy for her on her debut. |

Sam Trammell is much hotter in the show than I pictured him in the books...woof woof.
*inside joke for the book readers* I think i'm gonna watch it again tonight after Weeds, just because. |

For the record, I've seen Sam Trammell totally naked*. I'm totally in support of True Blood using this valuable resource in future episodes.

Anyone who has written a vampire book in the last 20 years owes a huge thank you to Anne Rice, it was even mentioned in one of the specials leading up to the
show.

Speaking of the specials, I was surprised that Stephen King's SALEM'S LOT got absolutely no mention. I'm not necessarily "into" vampire
novels/fiction, though I've seen many of the movies referenced, but I thought SALEM'S LOT (the book) was one of the more popular works involving
vampires (though it may not have added anything to the vampire canon).

I liked this a lot. I agree with Gregoire that the black woman is a bit over the top, but I disagree about the cook. He was perfect.
I can't wait to see what other special abilities the other characters have. I loved John From Cincinatti so I have no taste. |
