You can live in the Green-Hawley neighborhood. Houses are cheap.

I just moved to Austin a week ago. Great city so far. Traffic kind of sucks though. I live in the Northwest side of town and it seems like everywhere I go
it takes a half hour to get there. I've seen buses around but I'm pretty sure you need a car to get around.

How do you like the culture of Austin E? Is it a good gay city?
NCL, I really have never had a problem with the T. I usually only waited 5-10 minutes for a train and it never randomly stopped in the middle of a route like the El. |

survivorjb2003 wrote: The culture is great. Very laid back and very liberal. It's one of only about 4 counties that votes Democrat every election. Oddly enough, I just moved here from one of the other three. I'm not gay myself but I have been to a gay bar here once and it seemed pretty cool. There are a few in the Warehouse District. I would guess that
it's probably the most gay-friendly city in the state. Great live music and film scene too. And lots of outdoorsy things to do. And since it's in
the middle of the state, a lot of the other bigger cities are only a few hours away so there are nice opportunities for weekend getaways. It's just a
really cool city. I moved up to start grad school in a few weeks. I've always loved visiting here and I'm excited that I get to live here now.

Ugh - I had a nice, long answer typed out and then Yucko ate it. Short answer - you will hate Houston, with or without the car you will have to buy.

What would make me hate it, TB?
I am liberal and stuff but Republicans and straight people don't scare me. GreJu, Indy actually has some good gay bars that stay open late it looks like! I will consider it, but the transit stops at 10PM so....ick. |

My sister is a psych nurse and she was offered a job in Houston several years ago for unbelievable money. She knew a few nurses who went down there and ended
up hightailing it out because they hated it. They were scared to even walk to their cars after work.
So, she said no thanks. |

Eeek! Good to know PeePee. So it looks like Texas may be out for me then, unless I want to go to Austin. My twin is doing med school there, hence why I was
considering those cities.
I just checked into Miami public transit and it looks ok, but it seems the good gay area of Florida is Fort Lauderdale, which would be a bitch to get to and from without a car. I may have to suck it up and buy a car to open up my options. Ick. |

You will need a car to get around - especially if you end up doing shift work. The buses do not run late and I'd be askeert to take them anytime outside of
the rush hour park and ride buses. It's HOT and extremely HUMID for 6 - 8 months of the year. I think that the gay scene is pretty good - at least we have
a whole gay part of town. However, this city is seriously lacking the cultural department - the Museum of Fine Arts is a joke and you for sure won't be
able to go to plays, the symphony, etc without a car to get you there. A car is really a must and the traffic is a nightmare - especially around the Medical
Center and everywhere inside the Loop.
Did I mention that it's hot and there's not much to do here if you're single? |
