Remove this ad Need help We are currently using an inherited home computer that I think was built in the late 70's. It is, for lack of a better term, a ticking time bomb We went looking for computers today, and quite frankly I cannot see the point of spending even $1000 on a home computer (and the good ones seem to be $2,000) All we use our computer for is: -Trolling the internet -Saving pics/vids of baby ...and thats it. My husband doesn't even have a freaking email account. I generally don't work from home, its easier just to go in. So I'm pretty tempted to buy a laptop, which it appears I can get a pretty great one for $700. I figure by the time my kids are older and really need a computer for school stuff (easily another 5-7 years) I can then buy a more current computer, and still have the laptop. So? Am I nuts? What would you do?

Normal PCs are always cheaper than laptops, so you should be able to get a much better PC for the same $700, or the same specs as the laptop for less than that.

I don't know - all I can tell you is the cheapest PC I saw was $900 (this included a lot of crap that I probably don't need though) and the most expensive laptop I saw was about $1200 I guess I'm asking, what am I really giving up, if anything with a laptop? Especially if they have the same amount of memory

They're usually lightly used corporate laptops and come with warranties. Dell's Financial Services offers off-lease laptops at http://www.dfsdirectsales.com, starting around $400 with a 15.4" screen, running XP. Especially if they have the same amount of memory Usually a smaller hard drive and a slower processor. But honestly, who needs a 300 gig hard drive? I have an 80 gig hard drive on my laptop, have a ton of stuff saved, and still have over 30 gig left of free space.

Posts: 4805 (08/17/08 03:21 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts	DHC you're clearly not looking in the right places if the PCs are costing more than the laptop. you can easily get a good PC for like $4-500 now if you check out the discount sites like slickdeals etc. a laptop is good for the mobility, specially for tv/surfing together. expect to spend around $6-700 for it.

Remove this ad tigerdirect is a good place to get one, but I got my last PC from Dell got to dell.com and you can get one with everything you need for under 700 - I got Mr CBR an Inspiron with a full suite of MSOffice products for 750 last christmas

Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Desktop - cheaper, easier to repair, easier to upgrade, potentially bigger monitor, larger hard drive, faster processor/memory bus, better for gaming, bulkier/not portable. Laptop - More expensive, portable, almost as fast as a desktop, fairly decent size monitors/harddrives/memory, not user repairable for most, has to be sent away to fix. I have both. Got both at Future Shop. Check out their site before going. You can get a fairly good desktop for 400-600, especially if you go refurb. Laptops 500-800.
