I gotta give props to my main man Riliss for inspiring me to make this ranking thread. It is my first ranking thread ever. Any guesses on my favos/least favos?
Bottom three will be up tonight.

27. The Eighteenth Amendment (Prohibition)
Section 1. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited. Why it sucks: First and foremost, it sucked because it stopped people from getting booze! Whose fucking brilliant idea was this? Apparently, it came from a bunch of religious peeps thinking that getting drunk was an abuse of God's gift of alcohol. Whatever! Alcohol is the only means for some guys (like me) to do two things: dance well and get girls into bed. Secondy, look at the groups it was supported by: "the Ku Klux Klan strongly supported its strict enforcement as generally did women, southerners, those living in rural areas, and African-Americans." So the KKK, women, and rednecks liked it? It must be a great fucking idea! Third, when people lost their booze, shit went awry! Many social problems have been attributed to the Prohibition era. A profitable, often violent, black market for alcohol flourished. Racketeering happened when powerful gangs corrupted law enforcement agencies. Stronger liquor surged in popularity because its potency made it more profitable to smuggle. The cost of enforcing Prohibition was high, and the lack of tax revenues on alcohol (some $500 million annually nationwide) affected government coffers. So basically it helped the mob out, people were getting drunker than ever before, and it cost the government a shitload of money. They really must've thought this one through. To top that all off, it was the only amendment to be repealed. The US Government admitted a mistake! Holy shit! It must've been a pretty big one. The only good thing to come out of prohibition was the Simpsons episode where Homer becomes the Beer Baron. Major kudos to Rhode Island and Connecticut for not ratifying this shit.

Excellent idea for a thread, Franklin.
My favorite: Amendment 21 - Amendment 18 Repealed (i.e., booze is legal again). Just kidding, my real favorite is Amendment 1. The whole freedom of speech, freedom from religion, etc. is a pretty compelling part of what is needed for a democratic society and why our constitution has been able to survive for 220+ years now. gj! |

26. 16th Amendment (Income Tax)
Why it sucks: Because income tax is a shitty system. Too much record-keeping. Too complex for a lot of people, including those with small business and farmers. Income tax can discourage investments and savings and working harder becomes less valuable. There are other tax systems that work a hell of a lot better, but people don't like change, so I doubt we'll ever see a change. Also, Frank Chodorov wrote "... you come up with the fact that it gives the government a prior lien on all the property produced by its subjects." The government "unashamedly proclaims the doctrine of collectivized wealth. ... That which it does not take is a concession." YEAH! WHAT HE SAID! Connecticut and Rhode Island representin' again by not ratifying it, alongside Florida and Utah. |

25. 23rd Amendment (DC gets Electoral Votes)
Section 1. The District constituting the seat of Government of the United States shall appoint in such manner as the Congress may direct: Why it sucks: Basically, because I don't get what the fuck is up with DC being it's own place or whatever. Just accept that you're a big city. Those DC assholes were too self-important to just go and vote in Virginia or Maryland. "OMG look at us. We're the capital of the whole fucking country!" I don't give a shit! Besides, the electoral college is a shitty system and they should've realized it while they came up with this. Also, according to the amendment itself, DC can't have more electors than the least populous state. So…essential it's a useless amendment since having like 3 electors doesn't make a difference. You fail. Apparently Arkansas residents fucking hate DC pricks as much as I do because they didn't ratify this amendment. I salute them. |

24. 22nd Amendment (Two-Term Limit for Presidents)
Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term. Why it sucks: If we find the most fucking badass President ever, he can only be in office for a maximum of 8 years. That sucks! Here's why they put it forward in the first place: The rationale was a concern that without limits, the presidential position could become too similar to that of a benevolent dictator lasting not just four years but a lifetime, and that the position could become too powerful and upset the separation of powers. The people vote, you dumbshits! It's not like they can just say "hey I wanna be prez for a couple more years and it happens. They need to be elected again. Secondly, there was only one time a President lasted more than two terms. Grant and Teddy Roosevelt both tried and failed and those two were pretty good presidents. The only one to last longer was FDR, who some would argue is one of the best presidents of all time. Obviously people thought he was doing a pretty damn good job. I'm just saying that if one guy is the best man for the job, you shouldn't kick him out just because "his time is up" and hand it over to some second-rate d-bag. |
