I found him to be patronizing with Steven, pretending he was the first gay guy he's ever met, and saying in his farewell message he doesn't think of him as "Gay" Steven. Who would say that? It would only occur to a homophobe to say something like that in the first place. And also he is a reactionary conservative die-hard Catholic football coach at an all boys school. He seems very doctrinaire and shies away from independent thinking that might jeopardize his chances of getting into Heaven. In the house, he is smart enough to keep his real views to himself (just like his politics) probably because he figures if he comes off as a homophobe, he'll ruin his chances at winning.
