I've had the sad misfortune of working in the food industry and you lot need to stop nervousin!!! The industry (advised by the CFIA) has mandatory rates of testing for each shipment/product and companies are not required to detain the product until testing comes back clear (No one is going to hold/delay sales of product for testing as salesmen are a vicious bunch). Hence the need for the recall if results come back positive. Within 24 hours of finding something in the meat, the CFIA must be contacted and a list of where all the product went out must be given to them.

In this case, there isn't much to be recalled since a lot of it has been consumed by the public. The CFIA asks that the industry be proactive and voluntarily close production at the affected plant. Maple Leaf would've had to have done this anyway, however, they have been good about expanding the recall list to all product produced at the plant as a safety procaution even though the odds of other products being affected are pretty much nil, even considering the long dormancy period of listeria.

The Canadian food industry is very small and only a handful of companies have license to do their own testing and monitoring. The rest have their testing done by the CFIA. This may change as Harper wants to shrink the CFIA's range and have the industry police itself ---> so NOT a good idea as there is a lot of opportunity for cheating and all the companies push things to make sales deadlines.

Oh, and if you're eating anything from China (hard to determine since labelling rules are pretty lax) you have no idea how many bacteria and other nasties you've already ingested. Especially shrimp.
