First-Ever Two-Hour Premiere for "Survivor"

First Time Series To Be Broadcast in High Definition

CBS is moving the season premiere of SURVIVOR: GABON - EARTH'S LAST EDEN to Thursday, Sept. 25 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT), marking the first-ever two-hour premiere for any edition of the long-running hit series.

The premiere of SURVIVOR: GABON - EARTH'S LAST EDEN was originally announced for Thursday, Sept. 18 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT).

The premiere of SURVIVOR: GABON - EARTH'S LAST EDEN, which will also be the first edition broadcast in high definition, will be followed by a rebroadcast of last season's CSI cliffhanger finale.

This bodes well for the season. IIRC, Pearl Islands was the only other season to get an extended premiere. The reason there was that the footage they had was so great, a 60-minute timeslot couldn't contain it. Turned out to be a great season.

Let's hope the same is true this season!

Survivor has always had the most incredible cinematography, and is a big part of the program for me. I would imagine there will be a ton of beautiful HD shots for this opening episode. But it is all for the good, 18 survivors in 2hours should at least give us a bit of knowledge about each.

Pearl Islands <3 favorite season ever!!

I am excited about this and I hope that with the 120 minutes that means it was a great first few days out there.

Yeah, it sucks that the premiere is moved back a week, but the 2 hour premiere should be awesome. Hopefully, it doesn't mean that they are going to cut back on an episode during the season.

ooooh yay this is really exciting. A great development, and a good sign of faith in the season. The premieres always feel a bit rushed, so a 2-hour premiere should be a great way to establish each person early on. Normally they try and squeeze a bit of every person into the premiere, so you end up not really caring about anyone.

Moving it back a week doesn't really bother me, whats the difference?

If they do have to take an episode out, the only thing they would get rid of is a possible recrap.

Like, one person will get booted around 9:00 and then, the second boot at the end. I doubt they're actually going to give us MORE than what they would in two normal episodes.

I think it means an actual two hour opening episode, it just means that the finale will be on the 20th and not the 13th of December. I think there still could be more than one boot (do we know if there are three tribes yet?), but it will be a single episode, although i may be wrong. This will be the first time Survivor has premiered during CBS's launch week, so that is an amazing sign of faith in the program. I'm assuming it just means that instead of not having an episode Thanksgiving week, they will have one.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Amazon's long premiere too!

It's no secret that Amazon and PI had the best premieres in Survivor history, and this gets me actually excited for Gabon!

really? I think they would have mentioned that two people were being booted in the press release if that were the case. But I dunno.

I'm assuming it just means that instead of not having an episode Thanksgiving week, they will have one.

pretty sure they always have an episode on Thanksgiving.

Assuming that it's a 2 hour episode, not 2 one hour episodes, this is great news. I definitely don't mind waiting a week if it means a longer premiere. Better character development... should be great. Just hope they don't change it last minute like they did with Vanuatu.

Wow. Fantastic news!

So does this mean anything for Big Brother or is it still ending on target?

Anyway ... this also could explain why the cast release didn't happen last week. It typically happens about a month before the premiere (give or take) so a reveal on the 28th as Todd stated now makes sense.

Sucks it's moved back but a 2 hour premiere will pwn. They must want to maximize that HD exposure. That would make more sense with the 28th release date of the cast too...

Finally someone gets it! I would bet the house that if this delay is true, that CBS will air the first 2 episodes on the 25th rather than have an extended premiere. Let's not forget that Survivor will be preempted on Oct. 2 because of the freaking Vice Presidential debate which was the cause of the show debuting a week early in the first place. I could take Survivor being preempted for a Presidential debate but preempted for the VP debate, who the hell cares. We don't vote for the VP.

I wouldn't necessarily think that the delay necessarily means that Gabon is a poor season. CBS is just doing this to get the most bang for its buck. Why waste an episode of Survivor on a day that is still in the Summer rerun season when advertising rates are lower and ratinga aren't as meaningful. Since they moved Big Brother 10 to Thursday, CBS can now air that show's finale at its regular time on Sept. 18th and still probably win the time period.
